Headlight re clear help

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/...psslokog7c.jpg

Ok so my head lights are starting to get foggy (from the outside) and I need to re clear them. I watched a video and it seems to work great and I'll post it up for you guys to see if it's something you would do. I can't be driving such a nice car with crappy head lights lol :p

Iv used meguiars for a temp fix, it's a polishing paste but it just comes back a few days later. The car sits under a car cover so the sun isn't directly hitting it

homelessgdog 08-31-2014 08:21 AM

I've got the same thing on my wife' 2012. Just stopped by the dealer and he said it was from car washing? I was like, huh? He ordered replacements for both under warranty. I guess I can look forward to this in a few years with the new ones. Good luck.

Your dealer sounded stupid but is sort of right about it. Washing is a factor but not solely the reason. He should have specified and said washing technique and chemicals used to wash it. If your car started to haze and it is only two years old, it's a defect or your Z is in a harsh environment or someone did/used something on the lense that caused it.

zefaulter 08-31-2014 12:28 PM

So, how do you fix this? Sand, polish and clear?
Edit: just watched the YouTube link. Cool stuff

SlowZ 08-31-2014 02:45 PM

I mean the guy in the video make it look so easy lol. But I just don't know how well it works or if it will just revert back to how they were a few days later

Sam's club, $30 and a 5 year warranty.

true that. figure out wat caused this case your lenses will end up looking like crap again after the re-clearing process. :ugh:

dd's parked outdoors 24/7 for 6+yrs and the lenses are clear. my 10yr old G's lenses are also crystal clear...and obviously
my 5yr old Z's lenses are crystal clear as well.

i think people that use auto washes (including touchless and partial human soft cloth washes) tend to get this often.

Heard the meguires kit is good the issue is really getting a good uv coat on them after you clear or you will be doing it again in a few months.

54110 Infinity 4.1 Headlight Restoration Coating - Delta Kits has great reviews for a DIY.

I have this kit on hand atm but I had someone do mine for $90 with a 5 year guarantee to not fade if they do he will do them again free. This was a 4 hour good job wet sand etc.

They do headlight restoration including a UV clear coat. It is warrantied for 5 years. It costs $30. :p

SlowZ 08-31-2014 10:16 PM

Ahhhhh and I have a membership there... I'll definitely have to check it out. Never thought SAMs club would do something like that. I would just be worried about them messing something ELSE up like my hood, front bumper, and fenders. Rep for you!

Pintsize725 08-31-2014 10:31 PM

I don't have a before pic but mine weren't too far from yours. More yellowish though.

Here is the after:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3856/...8b5f9d1e_b.jpg

Also, the only thing I noticed was some residue from the sanding left between the light and corner of my fender. They raised the hood and taped off the edges around the entire light.

axmea? 08-31-2014 10:39 PM

Before you commit to Sam's Club's work or anyone for that matter, ask the guys what their process is and what chemicals they use. Finally, find out what acrylic clearcoat is used. They have to make money somehow. If there is no clear coat, it will just oxidize and haze your lense again. The cost of materials and labor is so narrow you have to figure where they are going to make a penny. And don't tell me it's plain volume 'cause there is more to turning your customers.

Sound advice here! Nothing to add.

Just use the 3m headlight restoration kit you can buy at autozone. I've used it on my old rx8 and the result was amazing. Consisted of several grades of sanding and a polish. All done with a drill attachment.

It is most definitely automatic car washes. My 2011 has the same yellowing and scratching on the headlights. The first two years they looked like brand new while I did all hand washes every month or so. Unfortunately the past year was hectic with work travel and with being sick, so I would run it through a car wash occasionally just to keep it clean and I have noticed the headlights yellowing badly (I knew better but did it anyway, so now I must do my penance). I will be doing the Maguire's restoration soon and will post before and after pics.

SlowZ 09-01-2014 08:33 PM

Thanks all for the advice! I hand wash mine because I'm too low to get into the DIY wash in town. I like the idea of doing it myself so I'll check out autozones 3m one.

If I (a woman) can do it..... Surely you can.... :P

I did the 3m kit about a month ago on one of my headlights. It looked great for about 2 weeks, but now its back to the same original yellowed, hazed state. You def need to put a proper protectant on after you restore them.

SlowZ 09-02-2014 12:53 AM

Blahh maybe I might have SAMs club do it then, especially if they have a 5 year warranty on it like Pint said

Just ask them what their process is pay attention to what they say is the clearing process and what they use for clear coat/uv protection.

kenchan 09-02-2014 09:43 AM

i dont think it's the UV coating itself they put on that sheilds it from getting yellow.
im sure it helps, but it's not the solution.

cause my dd's parked outside use no uv protection/sealants beside watever
spray i use from time to time to clean the lenses... and those spray polymers only last a
few weeks at best.

it's definitely something people are using to wash their cars with imho...

RyanWest 09-02-2014 06:38 PM

Looks like you washed your headlight with a Brillo pad. Wonder what your paint looks like :(

Paint is perfect, as is the rest of the car. It's just the headlights that need attention. I clean my tail lights just as much as my head lights and they are clear as can be.

RyanWest 09-02-2014 09:25 PM

What have you been cleaning the lights with?

SlowZ 09-02-2014 11:59 PM

The same soap since I have had the car which is 1.5 years. It literally just started getting bad too. If it's the soap then my tail lights would be trashed and they're not.

kenchan 09-03-2014 11:12 AM

which soap and were you using a sponge?

I think it's partly due to radiation given off by HIDs too. A lot of older vehicles with HID that haven't been cared for have that extremely foggy look about them.

SlowZ 09-04-2014 09:53 AM

Meguiars gold class. Iv never used a sponge on a car. I'm not too worried about it anymore, my brothers friend is going to work his magic on them and make them look brand new again.

My headlights look like the one pictured in the first post.

My Z has been washed by hand, in my driveway, with soft water and Meguiar's car soap, using microfiber towels only, since I bought the car new.

So it's not only a problem for people who use automatic washes or take their cars to a car wash.

My Z is always parked outside. I have no idea why my headlights look so bad. My tail lights look brand new.

kenchan 10-01-2014 11:54 AM

that's odd. both my dd's are parked outdoors 24/7 and do not have this issue.

i recommend wetsanding it with #2000, then #3000, and use some polish.. like scratch-x2.0 will do. should turn out nice. GL

Limeybastard 10-01-2014 12:02 PM

LOL at everyone blaming car washes and sponges. It is the piss poor plastic that Nissan use. Even in the cloudy UK I have seen 370z's start to get foggy after about 3 years from top area of the headlights.

God help those of us that in live in a sunny hot climate. They will cloud up just time when the bumper to bumper runs out. 3 years or 36 miles whichever is sooner LOL.

Chasedixon21 09-28-2016 04:05 PM

So can i get my fogging headlights replaced under warranty. I live in florida and mine is a 2014 and already hazing/ yellowing around the top area

Silverstone 09-28-2016 09:04 PM

It's worth a shot, as it may be looked at as a manufacturing defect.

To anyone looking for a coat of UV protection after resurfacing yours, look at Opti-Coat. I've had good experiences with it.

barncobob 09-29-2016 03:23 PM

5 year warranty.....ummmm I laugh at the lifetime warranty claims..my lifetime? or until U go outta business next month, its all BS.

homelessgdog 03-04-2018 02:41 PM

Long overdue response. After lights were replaced I put the 3M clear on them. Lights are perfect after 4 years!!
I have put this clear coat on all my vehicles now. FYI.
