Touch up paint advice

I have a black car and I recently gave it a good scratch on the roof , ill buff out all I can but any advice on touch up paint that will make it look flush. Will it match , what to do ? Normally touch up paint looks different becuse there no clear coat , is there anyway I can fill it in so it looks like nothing happened

Dr. Colorchip or paintscratch.com

Is the factory touch up paint as good as dr color chip? What makes dr color chip better?

Their website is blocked for some reason here at work. They've got a whole procedure, including clearcoat. I'll have to look again when I get home.

Depending on the application and how deep the scratch is Dr. Colorchip does a great job. Another to consider is the following:

Fix Deep Car Scratches > Chipped Paint Repair > Touch Up Paint Kit

This used to be or still is by Applied Colors. The difference in this kit is the use of 3M putty to fill in the chip or scratch to make it flush before applying the touch up paint. I would imagine just buying some 3M putty to use with a Dr. Colorchip kit would get you the same results.

Would it be even better to get the dr colorchip and also a bottle of factory paint to get a better match?

i'd put glossy black vinyl on the roof and call it a day.

Chuck33079 06-05-2013 02:06 PM

It's the same. They'll get you the correct paint code.

I've personally used Dr. color chip on my 2004 3-series which was what BMW calls "Mystic Blue", my experience wasnt as good as others had with all the testimonials and videos i had watched or maybe i just had way to high of expectations. Either way it didnt look as great as i had hoped. It doesnt hurt to try it out. if i recall its not that cheap either though so hopefully you know someone with the same color Z as you because if not you could just get stuck with a bottle of paint you wont ever really use. Just my :twocents:, good luck with fixing it though man

yah, i hear you get a 3ft car with dr.color chip.

hardly a 'fix' for me either.

do the vinyl or get the roof painted. and stop putting your pizza boxes on the roof. :icon17:

If you are looking to not notice it every time you look at the roof dont use Dr colorchip. Its good for chips but still can notice the filled spots. My car is black also used on the side mirrors and front fenders and was moderately satisfied but I can definitely tell where the chips were. If you are a perfectionist and polishing wont get it out, id consider a body shop or wet sanding if you are familiar with it. Dont learn on your Z though...

I've had the best success with paintscratch.com. I have the DR Colorchip as well, but haven't been able to make it work well for me yet.
