Claymagic/ What type of lube?
 

hi just saw a 100g bar of Claymagic at O-Reilly's, on the back it said to use soap as a lubricant. Is Claymagic a good choice for a claybar? What do you guys use to lube car surface? I use Meguiar's Quick-detailer it works but is expensive.

I'm kind of a Meguiar's guy myself, so I use their claybar. Of course, it recommends using MQD as the lube. The first time I claybarred a car, I used MQD as recommended. Worked great, but yeah, kind of expensive. I wish you could buy a 55 gallon drum of MQD at a big discount. Love that stuff, use it all the time, just a little pricey for something like a claybar lube.

Next time, I just used a fresh bucket of soapy water. Also worked great. No real difference in terms of convenience or results, so I just use that. Much cheaper.

Curious to hear what others' recommend....

I have used MQD as well, now I just add a few drops of dawn to a gallon of water. Same results, IMO.

dawn is ok to use like maybe once a year or never; it dries out your paint+strips ny wax u may have on the car. im gonna try the soap idea, i bought a foam gun from
wallmart.

I have used the Claymagic. It was the same as other clays. I have used alcohol in the past. It's cheaper than QD.

Kind of the point of using the clay bar in the first place, right? Strip the paint of wax and contaminants, and after clay, Polish and Wax.

The theory I've adopted is Clay bar will do an excellent job of removing above surface contaminants and will strip the wax. If you have major wax buildup (white stuff) you would use dawn because clay baring that will most likely scratch the paint.

Now compare paint to skin - both have natural oils. Dawn/detergent will get your paint very clean but will also strip your paint of all those good oils; compare that to a car wash soap that will clean the paint/lifting dirt/adding lubrication well preserving those natural oils. So I'd just wash normally - maybe use a little higher concentrate of soap/then go back to normal mix.

Whats the difference between a wax, sealant and glaze? I still gotta learn how to use a orbital polisher then I'm set.

I dont use dawn for my wash, only as a lube for the Clay. (twice a year), and actually i will use whatever dish soap she has in the house at the time.
as for your differences.......
Waxes are typically made from carnauba, and under normal conditions must be re-applied every month or so.
Sealants are typically polymer formulas, that require less frequent application.

Glazes/Polishes add oils to your paint, and remove fine swirls, and bring out the gloss before waxing.

I just use some car wash soap (Zaino) in a spray bottle. Pretty strong mix - a little stronger than what you would mix for a wash. The CM lube sucks. Toss it. If you need to get more aggressive with it, just let some of it evaporate and it's like having less lube.
And get a good spray bottle with a geared trigger or your hand will get tired and you won't keep it as wet as you should.
