Do you rinse the bird crap out first? I'd think you don't want to press that stuff down against your clear coat. I always rinse it, sometimes switching the hose to higher pressures to get all of it out with the water, then detail the spot.

arcticreaver 05-25-2009 06:47 PM

i have like 3 towels, one is soaked in hot water, to use to clean off the bird poop and the other 2 is to wipe off the uqd and a final wipe

what i do is, i use the california duster to dust off my car every night, and i use the ultimate quick detailer with microfiber towels to 1- clean off the bird poops and 2) give my car the shine it needs and the smoothness. not sure if my method is sound, but i like the results i see, and it's simple.

does zaino make a similar product like meguiars?

Yes they do its actualy Z-6 Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray
Description: For quick detailing between washes or a quick wipe down after washes, Z-6 enhances and maintains the Zaino look. Z-6 is so concentrated, that a little really does go a long way. By far, a customer favorite, a bottle of Z-6 should always be close at hand. For fast and safe removal of dust, water spots, finger prints, and light soil, use Z-6 frequently.
More can be read from here Z-6 Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray: Zaino Store

Basicly your doing something that i am fearfull of doing, my fear is if i just use a z-6 or Ultimate quick detail in your case, i am afraid that i might actualy rub dirt onto the car. When i wash it, i am using water mixed with z-7 "uses special water based lubricants to buffer the paint from scratches, swirling, or marring. Even in hard water conditions, Z-7 produces long lasting suds that gently slide dirt, grit, and debris off your vehicle surface."

But if you really choosed to do it your method then yes you can use z-6 instead of UQD. Your method actualy does seem fine just that i am afraid to do it.

Q: Are Micro-Fiber products safe to use?

A: Zaino has been testing various Micro-Fiber products. Unfortunately, the jury is still out on them. Some of them are excellent and do not scratch. Others are terrible and definitely scratch. The quality control of these products from overseas, especially Korea, is not consistent, so you never know if they will be the same scratch-free quality. Even when using the same brand, we found the quality to be inconsistent. For now, we do not recommend using them. However, lab testing is ongoing, and we will post an update when we have more conclusive results.

NOTE: If you are already using microfiber towels, look carefully at your paint finish under flourescent light when you are using your towels. If you are not getting any swirls or fine scratches from the microfiber towels, then you are okay and can continue to use them. Remember it's better to be safe than swirly.

yeah which is why i use the california duster before anything else. personally i think it's impossible to keep a car perfect but at least i can do thing to help maintain it. with the duster i remove most of the dust. i've actually had a thread on the meguiars online forum about the ultimate quick detailer. the uqd states that it is safe to remove dust but exactly how much dust? no one really knows. so i was suggested that i use the duster to get rid of most of the visible dust before using the spray so that i minimize the chance of scratching the paint with dust and dirt.

Nice writeup, though I'm not a big fan of zaino. You list the two buckets, but just to mention it, having a bucket of plain water to rinse and another bucket of car wash soap can help minimize swirling.

Yeah you dont have to use zaino at all, i am almost positive you can use what ever product you want, it will use the same steps.

I forgot to add the two bucket system, but yes thats why i had two buckets and i like to toss my extra towels into another bucket too lately lol

i think the real key to how much dust you are removing is not UQD but how thick the towel you are using is. A really thick cotton towel can probably hold more debri than a thin micro fiber towel. I dont know what type of micro fiber towel you are using but i would rather use a thick one that is less likely to press dirt apon the car than a thin towel.

Regarding your personal experience, how effective has Zaino been when removing minor scratches and blemishes?

Honestly i coudlnt tell you. I allways had a white car. This is my first black car.

I ended up putting like 5 few layers of z2 on the car. I then wanted to try to use z5 aka swirl/scratch remover to see if i can hide the angel hair or angel lace, what ever you wanna call the super fine scratches that i can only see in direct sunlight.

Sal Zaino told me ZAIO (zaino all in one) will remove the layer so i could start from scratch. But honestly i dont think he realizes how strong zaino is becuase i dont think zaio removed the layers, i tryed removing it then applying z-5 and it didnt work.

Hopfully some one with more z-5 experience than my self can help you.

Sorry, thread resurrection.

Does it have to be Liquid Dawn or could it be any unscented dish soap?

Forrest 07-30-2009 04:36 AM

I suspect any unscented dish soap works becuase they are all strong.
But honestly i dont know.

At safeway it cost me 1.99 for a small bottle (original scent) i think thats fine the original scent becuase it doesnt add any thing.

FricFrac 07-30-2009 08:11 AM

I've heard Sunlight frequently but usually its Dawn that's recomended. I suspect either will work.

LiquidZ 07-30-2009 11:04 AM

I couldn't find unscented liquid Dawn so I settled for another brand that was purely unscented (smelt like chemicals).

I feel it will work the same.

i should probably make it clear, far as i know original scent dawn = unscented.

i think when they say unscented they dont want you to buy apple/orange/cherry smelling dawn.

Just go buy the basic blue original scent.

But honestly i suspect any thing will work.

370er 07-31-2009 12:01 AM

I live in Australia and just brought a Zaino kit. In regards to the liquid dawn dish soap, I don't think they sell that here. Would any dish washing liquid be okay? Are there any ingredients I should be looking for so I can buy something similar here? Thanks.
