Water spots on carbon fiber
 

Goooooood morning lovely Z community!

I need help in a bad way.. after searching many forums including this one I am still not sure what to do about my carbon fiber hood. After it rains, or especially if I wash my car myself I get these horrible water spots on my carbon fiber hood that I cannot get rid of.

What can I do to get rid of them? Does anyone know of any good products to use? Or do I need to get it polished or something?

It's the same as paint, you can try some vinegar, if it comes off, you're lucky, if not, a good buff might take them out... Worst case scenario, you'll need to sand it with fine grain sandpaper (do NOT do this if you're a novice)

Just the thought of having any grit of sandpaper near my paint freaks me out.... :eek:

Maybe try some fine polish, then put on a paint sealant, then wax on top of that.

Use M205 with a random orbital. If the some spots remain then use M105 then finish with M205.
All the spots should come out with M205 unless it has etched into the clear coat.
After removing all the spots use a good glaze or a sealant.

Once my Porsche sat near a sprinkler on a hot sunny day. Later I noticed similar looking spots that would not wash off. Turns out they were mineral deposits from hard water. I had to use cleaner wax and a buffer to remove them and made a mental note never to leave my car someplace it could get wet while the sun was shining.

I assume your hood is clear coated. I've seen several posts that claim the factory clear coat that comes with some CF hoods is very thin and breaks down after about six months and has to be resprayed. I had mine additionally clear coated at a body shop that way I can buff it out if I need to and don't have to worry about burning through a quickie factory clear coat. Might want to consider that. It only cost me $600 and that included a custom paint job.

As for your stains leaving a wet car to dry in the sunshine will certainly leave spots like yours as the water evaporates and leaves calcium deposits behind so try not to let that happen. That's what it looks like so try the cleaner wax or polish and a buffer.
