Should I avoid waxing these areas?
 

Hello guys, I just bought myself a 2014 370z and finished my first car wash. I wanted to ask you all, in the pics below, I am guessing I should not be waxing these areas A,B,C,D,E? If that is the case, is there a different product i should be using? I apologize up front, if i missed it when i skimmed through the waxing sticky.

I personally wax part 'A', as it is painted. The rest of the parts I just use Back-to-Black or Armorall on.

yes wax A. it's clear coated. I get a lot of scratches on that thing and am always buffing it.

The plastic B pillar is notorious for getting swirls and scratches because it's soft. I wouldn't touch it except to wash it with a nice soft wool wash mitt. I'm not sure if there is really a benefit to waxing it. The less your touch it, the better for scratches. I would consider polishing it very lightly when it does get those swirl marks, either with a plastic polish, or a very super fine last step car polish. Having a dual action polisher and a small 3.5 inch pad is best. However, I have not actually tried to polish it yet with those methods.

Those other areas you mentioned, I use a product called Meguiar's D16332 Tire & Trim Gel. The main benefit of this product, it's VOC compliant, which means it has low levels of volatile compounds, doesn't sling, and is water based, which is extremely important on rubber tires and trim. Every detail video I've seen on tires recommends using a water based product only. So far my experience using this product has been excellent.

zninja, thanks for the alternate suggestion. i do have some plastx polish. i also have a buffer, but right now i am doing everything by hand for exercise.

My rule-of-thumb is: If it's shiny, wax it; if not, don't. So I would wax A and not the other parts. YMMV

I don't wax A for the reasons several have already mentioned: it's soft and the less you touch it, the better. I polish it occasionally by hand with a hand finishing polish.

For B-E, any trim dressing should suffice, although I would stay away from the harsher chemical concoctions by ArmorAll and other cheapo brands. Personally, I use Adam's SuperVRT (because I got a huge bottle on clearance), but Griots and Chemical Guys both have similar products that I recommend highly.

I wax part A as well because it swirls easy. As for the rest, I use griots rubber and vinyl spray to make it stay black.

u know, i just use Griot's Speedshine for everything but glass. No white residue, natural wax projection. I dont even apply any special coat of 'wax' these days on my Z as it is not needed with all the apps of Speedshine after each drive.

If my Z was my dd, I would use PrimaHydro for all the bits including glass. This is a polymer based spray.


keep away polishes from the rubber seals by using some painter's tape blue. otherwise it will whiten or stain. of course you can remove the stain but just another pita work u shouldnt have to do.
