Default First Mod!

Hah, well sort of. I've add some self-stick foam weather stripping to the backside of my rear license plate to reduce the rubbing of the plate on my poor back bumper. I need to swap this out for some self-stick rubber as the foam may retain water and I don't want it to freeze and form little icicles.

On another note, I've picked up the Griffin Charge Converter to enable charging of my iPhone 3G (works on iPhone 3GS too). $45 CAD from Best Buy, small & unobtrusive but rather an annoyance that I had to buy it to begin with, but regardless, it works well.

Instead of foam tape that degrades I use Goop. Its one of my favorite adhesives. It forms a semi-permanant bond (eg it will stay forever and gives a strong bond of anything to anything but if you ever need to you can remove it by peeling it off). I used goop on the back of my license plate to protect the mounting area from the sharp metal of the plate. Just put a thin bead on the back of the plate and let it cure up then mount the plate. I use the Marine grade but I don't think there is any real difference from what I can tell in the various "versions" of Goop. Shoe Goo works good too but I can usually get Goop cheaper....

Yea I was going to use some rubber strips I have then I was trying to figure out what to attach them with. That's when the two brain cells started firing at the same time

Oh here's another tip for this one from Nxtazee - the little rubber bump stops for cabinet doors and drawers work perfect on the back of your plates!

That sounds like a great idea. How hard does the Goop get once it cures though? I'd hate to have my plate rattle now because of it.

Actually I think I like this idea better. It's cheaper as well.

The goop is fairly hard but its still rubbery. Get a tube of it regardless....

...and yes I'd just go with the silicone rubber bumpers the second time. I prefer the round bottom ones (easy big fella) as opposed to the flat as there is less of a contact patch....

here's my first "mod" or "mods"

#1 is my Red GTR start/stop button

#2 for charging and using my iPhone 3gs i use a black USB cable from Griffin.

Question for Mhaddy - why did you go with the converter over a USB cable like myself was there any benefit to it?? does the phone stay in the arm rest this way??? just curious as to what it does and or if it's any different then the cable I am using........

Damn I wanted the 40th anniversary so bad because of the red leather interior, but I couldn't wait another 8 months for it to come out.

Looks great, the GTR button looks sharp.

For those of you with I Phone charging issues... a friend of mine at work just got an IPhone and our USB charger wouldn't work with it. Turns out the IPhone looks for a signal on the data line rather than just using the +5V and GND. Turns out its just looking for 2.5V so a simple voltage divider (eg two resistors) will give you the 2.5V that you need. Since your source is 5V and its looking for 2.5V something like two 1K resistors should do the trick. My buddy did that and just soldered the two resistors and placed them in the 12V USB adapter.

Thanks, I thought it would just tie in to the interior perfect which IMO it does. I also think the way it lights up at night is nicer. It flows with the nav unit because it's no longer a big red circle at night it is just the lettering......

If you go to Future shop best buy what ever.... any way ask the guy for a iPod approved product then the USB cable will do the proper job to charge the phone. I just plug mine direct into the USB jack in the arm rest charges plays takes calls what ever I want, I can even use the iPhone to do ANY function while its on. Just make sure it is a Apple or Griffin product it will say if it is approved right on the package.
