By calculations, blocking off a 34-row with a 3" plate is approximately the height of a 25-row. So would that mean 25-row would be fine for DD? |
IMHO, light tracking means that you should be fine with a 19 row in our Canadian climate. Heavier tracking or FI systems definitely need more oil cooling power. It's the daily driving part that worries me most... I want to make sure my oil is warm enough before I step on it at all, but as soon as I am up to temp, it never goes over 90! Keep in mind, the temps you are reading on the stock gauge are the RETURN line temps, not the feed line temps.
so: DD & Light Tracker = 19 row DD & heavy tracker = 25 row Heavy tracker or FI = 34 row my :twocents: |

On that note, I have had some rethinking about how to manage the temperature to exact degree using a more sophisticated method than a blocking plate at the cooler . If you were to install a ball valve between the cooler and the engine, you can regulate exact amount of oil to the cooler. This will necessitate a bypass line to form a loop when the valve is in a close position. The down side is additional cost for the valve, bypass line and 2 t-fittings. The upside is you can regulate your oil flow to exact rate to the cooler. |
I don't see how 90 or 100 temps are bad that you guys are referring to, that's 190-212F, and our cars start to pull timing anything over 220F, only issue would be how long it gets to operating temps, and as for that anything over 150-160F is more than enough for you to be able to step on it
so i would be in for the 25 row and even the 34 in case i plan on FI for later down the road |

im definately in and agree with the Z1 choice. personally i might go to the track once or twice, so a 19 row would fit my purposes best, but if we can get a good deal on the 25 row count me in on it. Just ordered my exhaust components so oil cooler is next on the list.

19 his out of the question for trying to get a GB, I don't even want to inquire about the small one opens it up to too many options. Lets just keep the options to either a 25 or 34 row kit.
I don't even know why you guys are considering that, 25 should be a minimum especially if you plan on playing with power/FI mods in the future. My bias is also leaning towards the Z1 kits to! I like that they offer so many choices to make the kit how you want it.... |
I was cruising on the highway from Brantford to Toronto today in 34 degree weather and my oil temps were between 105 to 110. Need to get this oil cool deal going.
Also, I think 25 row as it will not be needed in the winter and easier to block off without blocking too much of the radiator. |
i know this is abit off topic, but whats the benefit of blocking off a part of the oil cooler? I am not at all aware of such procedures.

In for Z1 also.

From the sounds of your comments, I would recommend the 25 row and a blocking plate for daily driving. Either a blocking plate or a remotely operated "shutter" system to open or close the air flow incrementaly in order to control cooling in different conditions.
Good Luck guys! FI guys are really the only ones that should consider the 32 row... |
So for now, let's decide on Z1 kits?
Who's in? 1: Da.Menace 2: 3: 4: 5: 6: 7: 8: 9: |
