Steering lock failure

This just happened to me tonight at work in this frigid weather. I'm absolutely furious. Pardon my frustration for not reading all the threads clearly, but someone calm me down by saying as long as we're under warranty, this is free? I'm at 21K miles on an '09. I'm seeing the prices to replace this thing and it's going to give me a heart attack. Even if it is covered, I intend on trying to get my tow fee covered, as well. It's absolute ******** that this is placed on anyone else's shoulders other than Nissans. Absolute horse ****.

its a relatively easy fix if i understand what Alcheng told me
its literally just removal of a fuse when the car is in "on" position (so the lock is stuck in the disengaged position)

as my lock seems to have zero problems at the moment im going to wait until spring to take it off. Its far easier (and just prudent) to remove the piece rather than to wait for it to fail and have it dragged into a garage to replace (even if its covered under warranty and is free, its still garage time that you dont need)

It happened on my 2009 370z Canadian model last month, fail on 38000+ km, just bring it to the dealerships.
They will take care of your car and you don't have to pay any penny.

Mine did

It was covered in warranty if the car hasn't been 3 years and under 60k i believe? I also had a flat bed carry my car to the dealer ship for free

lol I know about the issue even before I bought the car. I was just too lazy (read: too cold outside) to remove it. plus I know Alex has done t and he lives down the street from me lol

It is covered under warrantee but isn't the warrantee just 3 years for the 09's?

Pretty sure the design for 2012 was changed.

My car is stored for winter but I'm pulling that fuse the minute I drive it home when spring hits...

However, I was FULLY reimbursed all $1,085! I nearly **** myself. I trashed Nissan on Twitter and got their attention from @NissanSupport and they pushed my "thoughts" onto Consumer Affairs. Safe to say it worked, at least a little.

Crap I wish I read this thread before.

This just happened to my 2010 Nissan 370z Roadster yesterday.

Pulled the car in the driveway - went back inside the house for 15 min ... came back out to start my car and it wouldnt start. Saw the intelligent light key come on my dashboard - not knowing what it was I went and got my spare key and tried to start but with no luck.

Right now it is as the Nissan Dealership - had to get it towed there.... they said it will cost $1350 after taxes to fix

Honestly should this not be a manufacturer defect if we are ALL having the exact same issue??? I mean whats to say this wont happen again and again???

There is a good chance it will happen again. I would suggest reading the DIY for the steering lock "fixes" and choose one to do immediately after you get the repaired car back.

Choices are,

Buy an adapter harness which cuts the brown wire at the steering lock. (Plug and play)
Cut the brown wire at the steering lock
Pull the steering lock fuse at the IPDM

There is no wrong choice, just make sure you do one.

Myself, I chose the wire harness option.
