Radar Detector in Ontario?
hey guys, I was thinking about maybe ordering a radar detector. what is your take on having one in Ontario. Does anyone have one? Do you find it useful? If so, can it be hidden from view (maybe under the steering column) and still be effective?

They are good, but portables need to be line of sight.
Best advice for a RD in a province where they are illegal is to have 2. Get a good one, and buy a used cheapy one of Ebay. That way, if you're ever pulled over because you were spotted or detected having one, you had over the cheapy one and suck up the $170 fine (minimum) and 3 demerits. Get caught a second time and your fine will be a lot more! I know a few people that use them and so far, they haven't been nabbed. If you spend enough, you can get the undetectable detectors that you can get out of sight in plenty of time for a typical radar trap. Then, you only have to worry about the extreme possibility of a cop pulling up behind you and pulsing his detector which immediately causes you to reach for yours mounted on a window. These days, having them visible isn't as much of a worry because of the amount of other devices it could be (GPS, Satalite radio reciever, hands free etc). |
do you think its worth the risk? I've only had one speeding ticket. It was on Britania near queen street. You know how the speed limit goes from 70 to 50 within 100m? cops are always there. It would just be nice to have on the 407 so I could open her up with little fear.
I agree that having it in the windsheild wouldn't cause suspicion considering all other types of window-mounted devices. I'm also contemplating whether or not its worth the cost. A good, undetectable one is probably going to be $700+ considering its going to have to be brought in from the states. |
I'm in the same boat. Considering getting one!
I think it would be worth it though. Cause u get away with one 50 over ticket by detecting their radar then you would already have saved the difference! |
lol that's one way to look at it.

Cops are switching to laser detection now too. Those are impossible to dodge.

sh**! really eh? I didn't know that. So maybe its not even worth getting.

which unit is capable of beating it?

You can't beat a laser, just regular radars. As soon as you're in line if sight, the laser gets your speed. But there are detectors that do both, and I know of someone that has it. It's helped him several times, once a cop pulled him over and actually congratulated him on "quick reflex" and let him go with just a 10 over, I believe it was supposed to be a 30 or something like that.
It's worth the money if you're big on speeding. But i would recommend you slow down instead, spend $200 on an oil cooler & go to the track. |
Ever since that 50-over law, I haven't been driving too aggressively at all. I guess I'll just keep it that way. the occasional on-ramp should be enough to satisfy my need for speed. maybe hit up the track a couple times here and there.

Radar detectors and Laser Jammers are 2 different things. Lasers can be jammed by dispersing the laser beam with an interruption field. It doesn't matter if you're in the laser's line of sight. Police usually targets the front bumper/grille of the car with their Laser LIDAR, and the laser jammers are usually installed inside the grille, which causes the LIDAR unable to obtain a target. Quick google search Antilaser G9 - Best Laser Jammers Canada - KMPH.ca Youtube video sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltSR7...layer_embedded Beltronics and Escort Passport are the two brands that I could recall which makes laser Jammers. There are more brands that makes them but I forgot what they're called. Please note that I am not endorsing one to buy/install one. I am merely providing some facts. |
Is it not also true that Jammers can be detected where detectors cannot?

I actually didn't know that :S the one my friend has just fires off a warning for laser, it doesn't actually jam it.
