Hard to argue with free tickets, nice!

Yup GSP is frustrating because he has all the tools to KTFO of anyone at 170 but usually chooses to play it safe. I guess you can't fault him as long as he keeps winning but it's not what the fans want, and not like he isn't capable of annihilating his opponents.

Will fire a heads up when I have confirmed dates but the BJJ Tourney I'm looking at will Ontario Kombat Classic May 28-29

I'm going to do Gi and No-Gi but I warn you, BJJ matches can be super boring if one of the guys involved just stalls all match and goes for position. I always go for the sub and slams to try and make things exciting...:eekdance:

I'm pretty sure slamming is illegal in almost all tournaments in BJJ, and I've seen many guys disqualified for it. What belt do you have and how long you been training?

I have no problem being disqualified from a tourney for being exciting and trying to finish. Far too many people grapple for 'advantage' and superior position, which often means getting in your grips, trying to get on top and holding on for dear life.

Belts are used for holding up pants, anyone who judges a person's ability by the colour of their belt is a fool, no offense intended.

My third month training I began to regularly sub blue belts and I have subbed brown and purple belts regularly in training while I was a white belt as well. This was out of BAMA, a well know Burlington training facility that is a member of the Gracie BJJ system and has Marcus Soares fly in and do our testing 2x yearly.

That told me everything I needed to know about the belt system.

I did win the 2009 Canadian Open Grappling championship in Hamilton, Ontario 2 years ago.

I've been training for 3-4 years now but I would say the majority of my training is MMA training while I did BJJ for the first year only.

I agree about lay and pray guys who stall and play the points game rather than attempting subs. But still, there is a big difference between skillfully subbing a guy vs picking him up and dropping him on his head.

If you were regularly submitting blue belts as a white belt let alone purple and brown belts then either you're a prodigy, the next bj penn. Or your gym promotes way too undeserving guys way too soon. There is a huge gap between white belts and purple or brown belts. There is no way a white belt can fight evenly with a purple or brown belt let alone sub them

I'm not looking for praise but after only 3 months training when Marcus Soares came to do testing at BAMA he raised me to blue after watching me do 3 test matches for him.

At the time he said I had a natural ability for the sport and combined with my size and athleticism I would do very well.

I am also 6'5, 210lbs and very flexible and athletic. This allows me to power out of dangerous positions but also use my flexibility to work out of guard for quick subs and sweeps.

My size and strength also give me a huge advantage when rolling against a 170lb purple belt or a 150lb brown belt. There are very few high belt guys my size at the club I was training out of.

Again after a year of BJJ I switched my training to MMA, so I haven't worn a GI since I won my last tourney and my focus has been more working on GNP from top rather than submissions.

Truly tho, both of my MMA coaches stopped at purple belt and I have watched them grapple blacks and browns all day long without losing a match. They continued to work on their BJJ skills they just stopped caring about the belting system and I reflect their attitude that a belt is something you use to hold up your pants..

Looks like we're going to have quite the meet! I'm really looking forward to this. I've been thinking a bit about the route to take and I think our cruise to Port Dalhousie would be a nice season opener. Thoughts?

z370z 04-12-2011 08:34 AM

I'm good with that

DjSquall 04-12-2011 09:05 AM

Sounds good to me.

Another thought for the crew from the East end is a trip up to cottage country. The reason I didn't suggest that initially is because we'd have to meet rather early, around 9 am and it's a few hours drive to get there, lunch then a few hours driving around, a few hours back (likely in traffic) and you'll be home well after dinner.

LMBmikeZ 04-12-2011 04:25 PM

I'm not feeling a full day cruise from 9-after dinner. But I'm up for the original plan of port dalhousie. I just don't want to be gone all day.....I know I'd hear about it fron the wife if I were to go for 12-14hours like it is sounding it would be.

jazz 04-12-2011 05:33 PM

going to miss this one....but ill be up for the next...might even have my car done for the long weekend in may...minus the wheels, who knows when they will come in ;(
