Exhaust too loud?

I've recently heard that the popo can pull you over if your exhaust is too loud and even give you a ticket. What the hell is this?

What is "too loud"? Is there a standard? What about the Harley's out there?

Lastly, would the Invidia Gemini exhaust be "too loud"?

theDreamer 02-10-2011 09:49 AM

It all depends on city/state laws on what is defined as to loud.
Many have set decibel levels, but really it comes down to an officers judgment on what they deem to loud.

An upgraded exhaust with stock cats will not be to loud, even long tube headers plus exhaust I do not have any problems here in Houston.

I've never had an issue around here. I have the FI with 18" res.

Last year, my friend who drives a 350z got pulled over by popo at Bayview/16th for having exhaust too loud.

He was using JIC Full Titainium Single Exit exhaust, which is known to be very loud, without silencer and with test pip (no cat).

All he got was a $120 ticket for illegal exhaust, and all he had to do is to install the stock exhaust back on, take a picture, and submitted to the police department + get a ticket fighter to fight it. He paid $300 total to get it all done without any other penalty.

Oh, and welcome to the forum Amuse370z :)

That's when you back hand the cop :rofl2:

TheGreatOne 02-10-2011 02:01 PM

Really depends.

On my older car (Prelude) I made my own decible paper for my HKS exhaust, so when I did get hassled, I showed them that it was in accordance with the decible law

Most cops leave you alone after that, one cop still gave me a ticket, I just paid it.

I'm in the process of getting the F.I. CBE....hopefully thats not too bad

its not to loud it's :yum:

lol never really thought of that. Obviously the cop was just finished chilling at Tim Hortons, along with another "On training" cop. The cop was just exiting the Tim Hortons plaza. Whats even more funny is, the cop pulled my friend over after we passed their own region. The street/intersection listed on the ticket is not even right, which was a block away.

Notsureifsrs.

Thats where I live.... :D

I have never heard the Gemini exhaust in person, but I planned to use test pipes with it. Theres no point in having an after market exhaust if I am not using it to the fullest.

How does it compare to the stock exhaust? I really don't wanna get a ticket for something that stupid. Whats the decible limit anyway?

ThoriumHotdog 02-11-2011 04:15 PM

This crap can easily be defeated since its left to a cop and his amazing hearing to decide if you're breaking the law. They need to be able to measure the noise to back this in court.

Going to court is a hassle but I wont help fund their nonsense so I fight things like this.

i dont think the police bug about the exhaust as long as you dont step on it hard when they are around. But as Da.Menance said, the JIC exhaust is amazingly loud especially with test pipes. i had it on my 350z, and then sold it to another guy. The guy got a noise violation ticket after 2 weeks so he had to remove it. the cop said " i couldnt hear i from a mile away". as for invidia exhaust, i wouldnt say u wont get a ticket, but another 370z owner had an amuse racing exhaust that lived in an area that police are picky, i dont think he ever got a ticket for his exhaust.

LOL... then we may be seeing each other pretty often in the summer :).

To be honest, there is not set dBa limit.

Its all up to the officer that pulled you over. I have Stillen CBE installed with HFC since Summer 2010, and didn't get pulled over yet (knock on wood), and a police even gave me a thumbs up when he was right beside me.

I have a story to tell. Being a Harley owner with loud pipes, The local police last spring were on a campaign to stamp out loud pipes:shakes head:. They and a guy from the DOT armed with a sound meter showed up at the waterfront, one of the biker hangouts. The deal: have the noise measured and no tickets would be issued. The standard set was the noise had to be below 88 db at three feet behind the tailpipe. A few guys get tested and failed. No tickets as promised. It was suggested the stock police Harley get tested. The cops complied. FAIL! Then a guy with a stock Gold Wing gets tested. FAIL!:roflpuke2: Well, you talk about embarrassed cops and DOT inspectors. For the remainder of the riding season, very few were stopped by the cops for having loud pipes and I have yet to hear of any convictions in Halifax. A friend also beat a ticket for wearing an 'illegal' helmet because the cop doubted the DOT sticker was genuine. In court, the cop couldn't disprove that the helmet didn't meet DOT standards because he was not an expert in helmet testing. FAIL! Case dismissed.

I have invida N1V3, it is pretty loud but no tickets from Po Po and they have pulled me over a few times but never mentioned my exhaust.
