Why tint?

Hi everyone! I looked around the forum and found many threads regarding tint percentage and pictures, but i didn't seem to come across a thread where people state why they tinted. My dad's villager has a tint but he said he did it since it won't make the car as hot...which confused me since i thought dark colors absorb heat but maybe the tint is made of something that reflects light! But anyway, why did you guys tint your car? Was it because it looks cool? (and yes it does!) or was it more of a privacy issue?

I primarily did it for looks, makes my yellow car look even brighter. Also privacy, i do tend to leave alot of crap in my car...

It will keep the car cooler, basic tints are metal based which help reflect.
Newer, more expensive, tints are ceramic and such (which are claimed to be used on NASA shape ships) which are not metal based but reflect just as much and more.

@ theDreamer: oooh metal based...i didn't know that! Tints with ceramic? may i ask how much everyone's tints cost?

I got tint because Im from Florida...so its really sunny and it will help preserve and keep my interior cool. Also it looks badass. I payed like $100 for 5%.

@ Florida_GATOR: it does look badass If you paid $100 for 5%, was it only for one window? how does the percentage grading system work? I saw some cars with 30% tint and it looks lighter than 5% tint. I thought the higher the number, the denser the material should be therefore resulting in a darker tint? thank you!

Thanks But it was $100 for Windows all the way around and the strip at the top. And as for percentages, the lower the darker. Limo is about 3%...and the legal limit in Florida is like 30% or 35%.

I tinted mine primarily to avoid on-lookers from being tempted to break-in and steal stuffs inside.

For looks, try and limit the heat(southern California), and privacy. I have not driven a car without tints... ever. Even in my family, everyone has the tints, but for them it's mostly for looks.
... but it really is awesome when other people can't see you... ahhh mischief... That is until the cops pull you over and cite you for it

Looks mostly, especially on a black car. Heat reduction is definitely a huge factor too.

@ Florida_GATOR: ooh i see...the lower the darker! Does anyone know the limit in Toronto? BTW, whats a 5-0? lol

@ sinceday1: oooh yeah that makes sense! But wouldn't people be able to see in once they put their face on the window and cover the sides of their face? but i suppose it would discourage people to look into a car if it had tint lol ^^

@ Wicked_G: yeah hahha i used to change in my dad's tinted van...no one can see me! But why do cops pull you over if you are in the legal limit? What did they pull you over for after realizing you have a legal tint percentage?

@ molamann: yeah haha black car and black tint! it sure does look nice..but...is it legal to tint in other colors?

Ok, I don’t do THAT in my car haha.
But sometimes, (and you have to understand that I sit in LA traffic AT LEAST 5 hours a day/3 days a week & 3-6 hours on Saturdays and Sundays), when I see someone doing something….odd, or a funny plate number, or anything out of the ordinary..I like to bust out the cam. Or laugh hysterically at them. That’s when tints come in handy. You wouldn’t think it-but…there you go.

My uncle, the previous owner of the car, got cited for tints twice, and twice he got them signed off by his cop friend(didn’t remove them). I have yet to be cited, but my father is a police officer so….. It’s all good(won’t ever have to worry about it). I have been pulled over twice though on ‘suspicion of aftermarket modifications’. I don’t know why. It's all stock. Must be a G thing.

oh yeah hahah each time i laugh at someone while im in the car and they look at me, i have to stop laughing right away LOL

aftermarket modifications LOL but i guess our cars are mostly driven by people who want to street race i guess...but of course most of us want it for looks and status too...i think...haha
