Proportioning?

does anybody know how to adjust the brake proportioning on the z? What would we have to buy because it's too front heavy for my tastes.

What you're talking about is a proportioning valve. This is typically a race only application and available here:

Wilwood Engineering - Proportioning Valves

Personally, on an ABS/VDC equipped car I wouldn't suggest you mess with this. You may get into more trouble than you anticipate. Most of your braking force is up front because those are the wheels that do most of the stopping. As you brake, the rear gets lighter. Increasing the pressure to them will result in premature rear lock-up and potential loss of control. This would be a particular problem in the wet. Nissan carefully calculated the optimum bias when the system was engineered..

swap to pads with less co-efficient of friction and you'll alter the bias as well

an adjustable proportioning valve is absolutely what you don't want for the reasons pointed to above

The 370Z is supposed to electronically proportion as much brake bias to the rear as it can take under ABS active conditions. Under non-ABS conditions I would agree that the bias is too heavy towards the front, which causes the front brakes to overheat. Put stickier pads in the rear should help. I tried Hawk HP+ in the rear with stock front, but the balance was then too far rearwards.

exactly +1

Are we talking about adjustable bias here? Never heard it being called proportioning...

Are you sure you're not mistaking this "Excessive front braking" with the front heavy nature of the car....

Z1Performance 09-15-2009 05:56 PM

bias= proportioning

same thing, different terms

1slow370 09-16-2009 03:12 AM

yeah i was actually thinking proportioning valve wise I can do the different pads front and rear and hope that covers it maybe ds2500 front ds3000 rear. If it is electronic i wonder if there will be a way to adjust it in the computer or if the abs/vdc stuff is in a separate system. It's too front heavy for me i don't like the understeer that results under hard braking. I would still set it forward but not as much.

You're not supposed to turn and brake hard at the same time, bad form. Brake hard to set the nose down and then turn.

Doubtful...That would be a lawsuit waiting to happen...

When did trail braking become bad form?

cossie1600 09-12-2010 05:47 AM

You should be happy because most cars are even more front bias than the Z cars. The Z cars have the most aggressive rear pads wear rate compare to cars like Corvette, RX8, Mini, etc

He said hard braking understeer, turning under hard braking is most definitely bad form and not trail braking. I trail brake on track and the car doesn't understeer, in fact the car rotates. Way to bring up a dead thread for your first post :)
