Rear Coilover Build-Up
As I have extra sets of coilovers here I started playing around with building a set of true rear coilovers. Most of the doner parts came from the matching fronts. This setup is much lighter than the current HUGE inboard spring and HKS units are heave from the steel bodies. I don'd expect to feel any difference but I would like to rid my car of all the stock suspension ajustment the can slip, IE... tow and camber.
I know I could just by the Stance Coilovers and be done. May have to play with the spring rates?

yeah forreal!? lol this is a great idea that ive pondered for years. aside from the structural integrity of where the two top bolts are places, there are no disadvantages to a true coilover setup in the rear

and regarding spring rates, your spring got a looooot closer to the wheel so 10k will probably be WAY too stiff, there are a couple of suspension companies that can tell you what spring rate to use in that location, i think ~6k is the number i remember from a long ago thread on here

pokeyl,
please let us know how the top mounting bolts/holes/area holds up. GreenGoblin over on my350z and g35driver has a stance true coilover in the rear, and im seeing him today so ill take a look at his setup. im glad people are being innovative. what are you doing with your hks coils? arent they true in the rear or is that just an option? sorry for the questions, this is a very interesting idea that needs to be looked at more! making your own coils (well not making, but assembled by the user for his/her needs) is the way to go. |

Finished and ready to install. If you have HSD coilovers you can do this by moving your rear spring ajusters to your rear shocks. You just need a set of rear springs, 5-6K range, 8" long.

Yea, 5K rear spring on a true type setup is the same as 10K rear.
People don't understand that true type rear is an option that is geared more towards slightly better performance gain. Yes it has a different feel but isn't any suspension change?

Length will depend on each shock, but should fall between 6.5 to 8" from what I've seen. KWs can't be converted iirc. And anyone that's concerned about placing the spring on the shock and putting extra stress on that part of the car, I wouldn't worry. I've seen tons of cars that had separate spring/shock setups from the factory but were switched to "true" coilovers, taken to the track, beat on, and driven for years with no issues.

Very cool. Kudos for thinking outside the box. I would have never thought of trying this. I would prefer true style coilovers in the rear so I could buy aftermarket toe arms without having to spend an arm and a leg on the SPL midlinks (if they are even available for the 370).
