Rack & Pinion Broken "power steering gear"

So I thought the thing was called a power steering gear and no im not talking about the pump but anyways, attached is a picture of the broken piece. What

Default Rack & Pinion Broken "power steering gear"

So I thought the thing was called a power steering gear and no im not talking about the pump but anyways, attached is a picture of the broken piece. What the easiest way to replace/fix this without replacing the ENTIRE assembly, which is 900 bucks. I believe there is a kit that fixes it but honestly im not sure...

Looks like it broke the inner tie rod. Nissan calls it something weird like "inner socket". It may come with new seals or may require them separately. Follow the torque specs, you don't want to over tighten this one or you'll be in for the $900 steering rack.

so the inner socket should fix it?? because there's a weird pin-type thing poking out of the boot. Ive never changed one but can obviously i can just need to know if that's damage that is still fixable with the inner socket kit....

Hard to tell the extent of the damage from the picture. The pin may have pierced the boot from being bent, it also could have damaged the gears in the rack, hard to say.

well I can tell you this... The car is on blocks since one wheel is missing. But even when car is off and not even moving, you can turn the steering wheel. is that related to that or pressure being gone.

Yes the steering will be fairly light as there is no resistance. You get the same thing if you just jack the front of the car in the air. You have even less resistance as the steering rack isn't even attached to anything on that side.

I guess I would go try replace the inner tie rod first, it is about $80.

Your sway bar looks okay actually, just looks like the end link broke.

yea thats all that is wrong with sway bar but dont I have to replace it since its broken on the joint??? I just ordered spindle and hub so almost back on all fours., one being a donut lol

On the long boot there is a metal strap cut it and slide the boot back then you will see a washer that is bent over as a lock (sort of)after bending it out of the way then use a big wrench to unscrew the inner tie rod it comes off righty tighty lefty loosey.

Good description Baer.

Make sure to use medium strength thread sealant on the replacement if it isn't pre-applied. Torque to approximately 68 lb/ft.

You'll need a new wire for the boot, the instructions for re-installing the boot are described on page ST-22, 23.

You won't need any thread sealant that is what the bent over washer does.

awesome thanks guys... at-least working on it wont be too difficult with the huge opening I have . Any idea were to buy it from other than nissan? didnt know if there was an aftermarket version or etc.
