Wheel hop

Anything out there to help with this yet?

I know '03 Cobras had major wheel-hop problems that were mostly solved with poly bushings.

I had a huge problem with this in my G35 especially with sticky tires mounted. Haven't really had a problem with the Z so far.

It's a bitch isn't it. I could not believe how bad it was in my 6sp. When I test drove an automatic it didn't have the wheel-hop problem. But I guess that the lower RPM starts probably helps....................

Yeah on my 7AT I haven't had any wheel-hop issues. I mostly attributed that to the independent rear suspension on this car. My last car had a solid rear axle, and it was a bitch to tune wheel hop issues out of the suspension, esp when stiffening up the rear anyways. It would always hop given an uneven launching surface of course.

I was at the drag strip yesterday and was fighting it all night long. Seems like you really can't get away from it unless you decide to just bog your launches. I've even had a little bit of it accelerating out of tight corners.

Just hoping there's a quick and simple fix like there was for the '03 Cobra IRS.

Last night was frustrating, though. Really wish I had a Ford 8.8" live axle and some ET Streets on my Z last night. Oh, and some really soft front springs.

I have heard that a solid rear differential bushing helped on 350Z's and G35's.

I think it's the other way around. My Mustang was really as smooth as butter on a hard launch, but the Cobras had and their IRS had a hell of a time putting the power down without the new bushings to help.

It could just be the design of the suspension, though, not necessarily whether it's IRS or a solid rear, because wheel hop is a huge issue leaving the pits in NASCAR and under heavy braking/accelerating at road course tracks. They have solid rears but use an old-school truck-arm set up.

I think you're right, I think it has more to do with the suspension geometry than anything else. On a sticky track with sticky tires some of the rotational force gets translated to vertical movement, and depending on the suspension this may allow the axle to be pushed up and compress the spring.

Right now I don't think the stock tires are sticky enough to really shock anything hard enough to break it. I'd be worried, though, if somehow I fitted some ET Streets on the back and was hopping like crazy. Those things will bite and could easily snap an axle.

I can tell you, the Corvette guys (particularly the '05 C6) explode rears on a regular basis from wheel hop. Poly trans/Dif mounts and better shocks seem to minimize this..
