Need help with steering issue
Im rideing down the road and i turn the wheel to turn and all I hear is a horrible screech and cracking sound. I also notice when im driving I have like 2 inches of play in the steering. I get the car on the lift and the universal joint on the column is screeching and looks as if its coming apart. Its my DD so i put some grease in it and the noise cleared up but it still has the slack in the steering. It damn near put me off the road when I was going to pass a car. Has anyone else had this problem or do I have the worst luck ever?

Not sure why the title is what it is, but how would this have anything to do with the Stage 2 TT? Sounds like a power steering problem maybe?

Oh, that doesn't sound good at all. I recommend you get your car back to your installer ASAP (for safety's sake please tow it there).
Anytime there is play in the steering like that, stop driving it! If the steering comes undone, you can end up in a ditch...or worse. |

to me, sounds like coupler
Let me Try to help:
YOU WILL NEED ALEN WRENCHES, HIGH TEMP LOCKTITE -Jack up the car driver side towards the front. -look for the steering column (shaft going from driver side firewall to block) -you will see a little coupler at the end of the shaft -before removing check to see how your oil feed line is ran. If its rubbing the coupler, it could be contributing to the noises but is not the problem. -on that coupling are 2 things that need remove. a nut (with stud) and another stud on the top. If the install was done correctly, it should have locktite on it so it may be a hassle to remove. use alen wrench -once they are both out take it off by pushing the shaft towards the fire wall (it will slide up) then just remove the coupler. -now what you need to do it go to the steering wheel and find the center by counting the turns left and right DO NOT TURN TURN FAST OR HARD you may disconnect or activate airbag. if you want to disconnect negative on the battery go ahead. -once you found the center, go back under the car. - WITHOUT turning/rotating the shaft connect the coupler. but be mindful that you may need to pull it back down. another thing is that the shaft has a notch on it and this is where the stud will be lined up with. -get the coupling onto the block (i can't remember the proper name) -when you get that done, go check the steering wheel to make sure its correct. -be sure that the coupler is completely on before doing the next step. - take your locktite and one at a time put locktite on the stud and reinstall using the alen wrench. -if this doesn't work then take it back or if you just don't want to do it yourself then take it back. Pm me if you need help understanding if you do do it yourself. *did this post on my phone so I apologize for anything I messed up/misspelled Last edited by VQStryker; 10-10-2011 at 09:41 PM. |

thanks stryker i was wondering how to get it off. I didnt want to attempt it without knowing. I got under it and i had someone turn the steering wheel while someone holds the tires an it looks like the joint itself has worn out like as if it wasnt lubricated or something. I guess it was a bad joint from the begining. I dont really had a choice on driving it its my only way to work so i loaded the joint with grease and it cleared up the screeching noise but i still have alot of play. Im just going to put put to work I guess. im waiting on gtm to help me out but they said i have to pay for one till they get this one back. wonderfulllllll lol i need a damn car lift boy would that make life easier.

U may be missing teeth do to a bad install, was it not on all the way? The joint on the steering rack area (engine) or the coupling is wore out? I'm thinking the installer did not have it completely on or did not install the studs correctly and cause slipage and erosion. grease/lube will only stop the noise and when installed grease is not involved. the teeth lock it in and the studs keep from it sliding off or slipping Glad I could help. i havnt really messed with it but look at it because it was installed by z1 so I dont want to do anything that would cause them to think I did it so Im waiting to see what they want to do. Seems as if gtm wants to see the part before they will replace it. kind of sucks because of course im the only one this happens to lol. take nothing away from z1 or gtm there good and the kits a good kit. Just sucks cuz its my only way around. Im gonna try to take a video of it and put it up here so yall can see. With work it may take a couple days tho.
