Nismo springs on Sport...
 

Ok... So, I've decided that I like the look of Kenchan's Z with the spacers and the stock ride height. What I don't want is the slightly softer ride due to that lower wheel rate. None of the aftermarket spring options seem to keep me near factory height except the Nismos. My question is, is anyone running the Nismo springs with the sport struts? Should I be looking to replace my struts along with the springs on this since they were made for each other?

A lot of guys are running the Swift springs with the OEM shocks/struts. I think you'll be just fine using them with the Nismo springs.

I also bought some Nismo springs which should be stiffer and are "reported" to provide a 0.5" drop. I bought them more for the non existant drop lol (any bit of gap gone is better than nothing)

I've got the full nismo spring and strut setup and can say the combo is perfectly damped and gives much surer handling without being harsh. It'll give you more of a drop than you bargain for though so if you want to retain some ground clearance ( like I did ), you may be disappointed. Performance wise though, they're awesome. Pair with hotchkis sways and some R compound tires on 18s and you'll have a blast at the track.

I still haven't gotten around to installing my Nismo springs (no shocks) hopefully this month

That gave me more confidence to do so instead of just jumping on some TEIN's (which i hear settle a lot)

i would probably go ahead and use the spacers and stock sus setup for now and wait for koni to release yellow's for our cars. or, once you're done with your stock tires get RE11's or try the new S04's for the stiffer sidewalls. (stay away from ContiDW if you want stiffer ride as they have soft sidewalls)

if you get the swifts chances are you might like the ride but you will need to worry about other things... like alignment (camber), if these springs are progressive rate will need bigger swaybars, clearance issues, etc.

right now im running the weds with ET38 (19x9)/ET15 (19x10.5) setup. no issue on the ride. i will most likely be getting yellows down the road over stock springs. :) i dont like tinkering with just springs. it is either stock, stock springs + adjustable dampers, or coilovers with my spring rate of choice and full damper adjustment.

Hey guys, I am also adding just the nismo springs to my sport package, I will still be using the sport struts. With only a .4" drop, I would assume my alignment, camber etc. would still be just fine. Am I wrong in thinking this? Also, are the nismo springs progressive rate just like the stock sport springs? Now I am getting nervous and considering not adding the springs. I just wanted a very small drop as this car is my daily driver. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Your alignment will be fine but you will have to get the car realigned after the drop.

As far as the ground clearance, so long as you aren't using gtspec's 6 point brace you'll have no issues on speed bumps so long as you crawl over them. I've bang'd my fast intention's exhaust can on a truck speed bump once, but other than that no issues. You will do driveways at an angle and you will scrape your nose on the concret parking stops if you venture too far forward in a parking spot.

So in short, it'll be just like every other sports car.

If I had to do it over again I would have gone with coilovers solely for the ability to adjust (raise) the height. But again, performance wise, it's a solid setup for the street and more than capable on the track. In theory I could contract someone to make me a pair of aluminum spacers to plunk under the springs but the lack of ground clearance is not that bad.

As for the springs I'm sure they are progressive, I had linear springs on a previous car and with every road imperfection they reminded you that they were. Adding that big ol' hotchkis removed the "softness" from the inital spring travel giving the impression of linear strings (consistent weight transfer when turning) which is awesome on the track, but made my commute bothersome. As a result I now run without a front swaybar when communting and now have a very comfy ride...it was fine with the stock front bar but the unfettered wheel travel (read: comfort) without a bar is just superb.

Thanks for the reply sarmyth. I am used to driving lowered cars, but usually use coilovers. I am trying to leave this car somewhat stock. Which is very hard to do for most of us. Suppose I can always switch back if I really dont like it.

Hey Volcom, I sntalled the Nismo springs and I love them. The handling feels just a bit sharper, enough to notice. I am not so certain that it lowered the car at all though. I measured the car before and after, but not in the axact spot. All the averages ending up coming out real close to the same as stock. That being said, these nismo springs mated with my stillen sways, and the car is just awesome.

I actually ended up selling the Nismo's and picked up some TEIN's.

Happy except for the fact that its definitely went lower than advertised. So far so good except for getting out of my condo parking, scraping something, but outside of that, its stiffer, handles great and wheel gap is gone, so looks great.

will NISMO springs work on a toyring model? and will it drop the car at all? what should I expect if i install them on the car?

The Nismo springs do NOT lower the car at all. This .4" drop is BS. Get them for the stiffer ride and if you want to stay stock height.

Like stated above I dont know if they lower the car or not but I have noticed after about 5,000 miles that the stock nismo springs have settled a little (maybe 1/4 inch or so).. I am real interested in knowing how the springs ride with the stock sport struts and shocks. Im glad I dont drive my nismo everyday cause it seems to beat me to death. Especially on concrete interstates... It does handles the curves awsome though

Yeah I kinda agree with you on that. The Nismo(car) looks lower is just because the front bumper lip sits lower. The car isn't lower then other trims. Having said that, did you measure it after the springs got settled? And did you get the full Nismo springs + Nismo structs or just the springs? Maybe that will lower your car .4" or so.

i installed the nismo struts and springs on my touring and it did not lower the car at all.
now i'm thinking about putting the swift springs. will those springs on the nismo struts lower the car 1.25/1?
i measured and the front is at 27-7/8" and the rear is at 27-3/4" i measured from the floor to the fender lip. the front actually raised about 1/8". the back is the same.

Just because I read through this looking for handling feedback I figure I would post. After installing springs there won't be much lowering until they settle at which time the Nismo S-Tune springs will only slightly lower your car maybe like 0.25-0.5".

Gotta agree. I have a '13 sport touring modified with NISMO shocks/springs and sway bars, NISMO exhaust and NISMO wheels. I think the NISMO suspension is maybe 1/4" lower, but it is not a real problem, and the handling is outstanding.

I live in northwest Ohio. Ohio has asphalt highways, Michigan has concrete. When I drive up I75 into Michigan the difference is enormous. I dread entering Michigan due to the horrible ride on the concrete and enter Ohio - with a sigh of relief.
