Rear Stabalizer Bar
 

Anyone know the exactly where the rear stabalizer mounts, how strong it is and whether or not it actually does anything?

There's a DIY on a rear bar install in that section, which shows the mounts. I'm not sure about the diameter of the stock bar, but my own perception in that there is still a fair amount of understeer with the stock bar.

Of course it does something....Without it the car would roll and understeer like a pig. A balanced front and rear bar set-up is crucial for good handling.

Sorry maybe stabilizer bar isn't the right term... trying to figure out what the hell the bar that cuts through the trunk actually does for us.

Oh ok. Youre referring to the rear strut bar. It adds strength to the chassis, helps reduce flex in the rear of the car, and lets the suspension do a more effective job. Works similar to the one under the hood over your engine. Hope that helps some.

the bar (rear strut bar) youre talking about mounts above the rear suspension. However, you need to cut the plastic cover thats surrounding the suspension in the trunk.

Ok well luckily for you i just installed the amuse bar yesterday night so i can show you where it mounts...but since im retarded i didnt take many pictures so its not all that great.

In the picture below you can see the circle i threw on there. It shows a "flange" that is welded to the car itself...thats the bottom side. There is another piece almost the same size that mounts to the car via 4 bolts that you remove to pull out the bar.

You can see what im talking about in this photo when i was putting the amuse bar back in. The bar sits on that bottom bit, then you put the top pieces back on and bolt them back into the car, then you run the 2 bolts per side through the bar itself and then start putting the million pieces of interior panels you had to remove... back on the car.

Im not quite sure what strut bar your talking about, perhaps im wrong with my above post. If so do you have a link?

Out of curiosity what made you sink the $$$ into the bar? Are you planning to use it as a harness mount point? Are those flanges to which the bar mounts really stout enough for that type of an application?

Well to make a long story short i sunk some money with Relentless Autosports to get them to make a full roll bar w/ harness bar and it fell through, so i was looking for another option...and found the amuse bar. What made it easier was Baker Nissan had this one on one of their 370zs out back, and had another bar on the way so they just pulled this bar off the car and gave it to me plus cut me a deal.

To answer the second part of your question, i was going to use it for a harness bar, and mount my 4 point to it...BUT contrary to what i had been told, you cant really adjust it to get the mount holes facing the driver. The bar is designed with the R/H drive 370z in mind. And its not safe to mount 2 eye bolts to it facing straight up, then put a harness on it. SO.....i think i have a piece of shiny metal.... eh, i really do like the look of it in the car tho so im not really crying...

As far as the flanges go yes i think they are strong enough to hold in the event of an accident or crash but im not an expert at such things. They mount to the car with 4 bolts and then are tied in to the bottom flanges through the strut bar with 2 more bolts. the ones in the bottom are welded i believe to the frame.

Ill be posting pics and everything else a bit more but Non Stop Tuning is going to do a Blog Entry on my car so im going to wait untill after that comes out before posting more pics.

I think you're referring to a traditional strut bar that is mounted to the actual strut. If an aftermarket bar that mounts in that traditional location were produced yes you would need to either remove the interior plastics or modify them to fit. As the 370z already has enough chassis rigidity in the body and the existing rear body brace any aftermarket bar mounted above the strut bar wouldn't really affect anything.

Why not use loop style belts?
