Putting the reducer at the fender liner would be a good place for it, there seems to be enough room up to that point for the 3" duct.
Yeah, the transition to a round pipe will occur just after/behind the fang opening and should be the size of a standard ID for a hi temp duct (not some crappy dryer hose)….something like this:
