Forgive my ignorance but I have one of the ever famous stupid questions. Although I can tell the difference between a 1 piece and 2 piece rotor. What is the performance gain of 2 piece of 1 piece? Why is it "better"?

2-piece rotors have an aluminum hat (preferably billet) and a iron ring. They can be bolted together in different ways, either fixed mounts or full floating mounts. The full floating setup allows for a larger temperature differential between the ring and the hat as it allows for more expansion, however it requires more maintenance, it is typically only applied in racing setups. The fixed mount setup can move as well because the 2 metals will expand at different rates, however their movement is limited by design. 2-piece rotors in the rear application may use an iron hat in order to have a more durable e-brake functionality. If you are only using the e-brake as a parking brake an aluminum hat is perfectly acceptable provided an appropriate thickness is used.

The Bobcat's do well on the street and auto-x but will wear down to nothing on the track in a day. A friend of my with a Corvette Z06 tried them on the track and found out the hard way by wearing them down to the backing plates and damaging his calipers. He is an older guy and fairly conservative driver.

^^ As everything and everyone else... they ALSO are only available for the fronts.
So, after all this time there are now 5 companies that I know of in the world that make (just) a front two piece rotor for the Akebono Sport brakes. (which is much easier than the rear). Yet still none of these companies besides (little old us) Relentless Autosports has put the time, effort, and money into offering a matching rear 2 piece rotor, and none of the other companies even offer a full floating option for their fronts . Not to mention the non-steller quality of material used by most of these companies in everything from the hardware, to the material (iron alloy) used in the casting of the outer rotor piece . I expected better. I am a little discouraged by this, mainly because with us being a small manufacturer without the luxuries that some of these bigger brake companies have... it is hard to justify the very slight profit margin that we make off of our RA rotors. When we use superior material and still are very competitively priced, if not lower priced than the competition.... I was hoping there would be a worthy front and rear option out there by now other than ours so we can stop making these. The time involved, work involved, and material costs alone are hardly worth it. Last edited by Scott @ RA; 10-22-2010 at 03:05 PM. |
