Coilovers and Springs (Pros and Cons)
 

I've been doing alot od reading. I been trying to decide wether to get coilovers or springs. I wanna know from someone who know alot about suspension. I don't plan on tracking the the much if at all. I would like to keep the ride quality somewhat the same, not too much stiffer than it is now. I've had cars with springs but Im unsure what they were. Could someone please shed somelight on this topic for me. If i could save myself a few thousand from buying a coilover setup thats always nice. There is just such a hug difference between price. I just want to know if there are any true benificial advantages to coilovers over springs.

If no tracking is going to be done one of the options are Eibachs Springs. They feel pretty good, and drop the car a little over an 1''. I've had mine on for a little bit, and did notice the improved handling...

Is the ride alot stiffer? Do you scrape speed bumps alot? Or even scrape the bottom of your car during normal driving?

a little stiffer but not too much, and as for scraping that comes with the territory just adjust your approach and you'll be fine, not scraping during normal driving.

The Eibach Pro-Kit is a variable spring rate setup.

These are very comfortable as under light compression, and as the spring gets compressed more the rates will get higher.

If you are not tracking the vehicle and want to be around an inch lower than stock, these are great springs. I've owned vehicles with both the Pro-Kit to Sport line (more aggressive linear rate) and full coilovers. One of our customer's vehicle with the pro kit springs rode very nicely without being too rough or scraping. Now, on approaches of bumps and driveways, it is a different story on how steep it is, but I can say that it in not TOO low to the point that it will impair everyday driving.

Avoid getting too close to parking blocks! ;) The black under spoiler (if your car is equipped) is a nice warning of possible scraping areas before you start scraping painted surfaces.

It should be fine for tracking the vehicle once in a while. Heck you can track the factory suspension!

Yep, I think Mike tracked a few events on just Eibachs Springs and was fine, I think he has upgraded since then but not 100% sure.

Adjustablity is a huge benefit when running coilovers. You can fine tune ride height, rebound, compression, and damping, all to your preference. With springs, you just slap them in there and hope you like the ride.

yep, I have since gone to the suspension off of stormcrow's nismo. Only got two warm up laps before my oil line failed and I crashed, but it felt very similar to the eibach/factory shock combo, just not as low. Now I'm also considering putting the eibachs on the nismo shocks after I get a couple good track days as is when the car is fixed.

wow sorry to hear that Mike. Do you mind sharing how you crashed and the details of the oil line failure. Is your engine OK?
