Steering wheel shake when driving 60+
I recently just had new drilled and slotted brake rotors put on my Z and I noticed when I'm going 60+ mph my steering wheel shakes pretty bad. When I brake there is no shaking whatsoever. So I don't believe the rotors are warped. I took my car to my Nissan service center today so they could double check the alignment and tire balance; they said both are fine and that they think it's an issue with the brake rotors being "imbalanced". Now these rotors are from Z1 and I've never had issues or heard of issues with their rotors. I also had new brake pads put on just a few months ago. Does anyone have any other ideas what could be causing my steering wheel to shake when driving?

Try bedding the brakes. You may have some deposits built up on the rotors.

When you were getting balanced, did they also inspect for high/low spots on the tires?

Any Wheel bearing Noise? Howling, grinding? squealing? even if subtle.
You can do a run-out check on rotors and bearing. Axial end play allowed on bearing is only 0.05mm (0.002in) or LESS. |
That's unusual that the shaking stops when applying brakes. Out-of-balance brake rotors will still cause vibration when brakes are applied. However, the only things changed before the shaking were rotors,, so they tend to be the culprit.
It baffles me the way the shaking occurs, I'll ponder on it. |
Take the rotors off. Check to make sure everything is clean on both mating surfaces. Remount the rotors one stud one different. Torque your lug nuts to 100 ftbls. Try again.

What wheels are you running? My SSR's have a hub ring to prevent this. Our cars are hub centric.

All that means is that your calipers are dampening any vibrations from the rotor/wheels. Remove to rotors clean everything off and reinstall.

Had same issues with a new set of rotors.
Clean all the junk off the existing hub to new rotor hat inner mounting face. Clean existing wheel mounting point face to the new rotor hat outer mounting face. Junk is built up and in position for the old rotors so throwing off flatness to the new rotor inner and outer mounting faces. Torque the wheels to spec. off the ground. If I torque to spec. while on the ground after initial snugging in the air I still get a slight vibration. Report back with your results please. |
