can I use regular brake line when upgrading to akebono

I upgraded my base brake to "remanufactured akebono brake" and was wondering if I can use my regular brake line with the new setup, with the addition of new banjo bolts? I already bought the stoptech stainless steel line, but i feel like it is not necessary for how I use the car: daily driving and here and there canyon run. I searched but didnt find my answer. Thanks for ur input. If I can't use the old brake line I can always install the stoptech.

If you are spending all this money on an Akebono brake kit it’s highly recommend you install the upgraded stainless steel brake lines and don’t cheap out you will thank yourself later on. Upgraded stainless steel brake lines will improve the brake petal feel of your Z and overall improve braking performance as well compared to the soft stock brake lines. I found also it will help prevent worn or even frayed brake lines from rubbing against frame rails and your suspension components. Great time to upgrade your brake fluid to Motul RBF 600 or 660 performance brake fluid. Consider the Z1 master cylinder brace too it will aid in improving your brake feel a lot. The soft stock brake lines have been known to leak.

If I recall correctly, no you cannot use regular (non-sport) brake lines for the sport (akebono) brake callipers. You will either have to buy the OEM sport brake lines or aftermarket stainless braided lines. I strongly recommend the latter and i have had a good experience with the Z1 brake line kit.

Cyber is right, I went from base brakes to akebonos and I can confirm it will not work. I called Z1 to verify and they warned that the banjo bolt for the base brakes would cross thread the akebono caliper. Z1 stainless lines are the way to go.

I thought you could buy the banjo bolt for the akebono calipers separately? Wonder if it works with the base lines. Although the Z1 non-premium SS lines are the way to go.

When I was upgrading the Z1 lines came with the banjos. I think Z1 probably does offer the banjos separately too. John at Z1 said that the banjo for the base caliper was too long and isn’t the same thread type.

I looked into OEM banjos for the sport caliper but they don’t exist. My local dealership said I would have to purchase the brake lines. There is a hardline that threads into the sport caliper they said.

The sport and base brake lines have different fittings.

Yeah... It's been so long since I installed my lines I forgot the sport brakes have that stupid block

Not sure about the soft lines for the sports, but when I upgraded my base calipers and SS lines, I had to use hard lines after the SS lines. The hard line connected directly to the calipers

Just checked my leftover parts bin. For my sport model, the SS lines replaced both the stock soft and hardlines. Interesting you wouldn't do the base the same way when upgrading the calipers.

There is 2 different sets of braided line. One set uses the hard line. And one that does away with the hard line.

I stumbled upon a kit for sale and I'm debating pulling the trigger. I don't track my car, just periodic spirited driving. Was the difference noticeable?

Aftermarket Brake Lines for the Sport Akebono Brakes

I had the stock rubber brake lines on my sport coupe replaced with StopTech stainless-steel lines and StopTech DOT 4 fluid at about 17K miles. There was a noticeable improvement in the pedal feel and I feel better that this fluid is less likely to boil under a heavy braking load, although I'm usually pretty light on the brakes.

I did the upgrade without the SS lines, and only needed to buy the banjo bolts. And I can confirm the issue with easily cross-threading the caliper :icon14:

I didn't have any problems with the OEM lines on the track, but I have a '17 and am not a super pro driver who can max out his brakes
