Brakes squeeling
 

I have a 2010 370z that is in wonderful condition. The only problem I have is the brakes squeal like crazy first thing in the morning when I am backing out of the garage.

background...I have Sport Brakes.... I live in Florida, I have 45K mileage, new pads where put on the car by a Nissan dealer at 43K mileage, the rotors are in good shape and do not have any high or low spots, the car stops straight and does not pull, the squealing noise is very loud, the whole neighborhood can hear it, it goes away for the most part once I drive the car........

My brake shop says the squealing is caused by the humidity here in Florida and metal shavings in the pads....that does not make any sense...any ideas on how to make the squealing go away?

What kind of pads are they? If you have semi-metallic pads that are more track oriented, you can expect squealing when the pads are cold. Ceramic pads typically don't squeal when cold.

I do not know what type of pads they are, they were put on prior to purchasing the car

Probably easiest to just replace them then. You could try re-bedding them. Or ask the dealer what kind of pads they put on.

The first thing I'd try is bedding the brakes (several threads on this site about it). There's a good possibility you just have some glazing and bedding will get rid of that.

Just saw this thread and have a question or need some opinions...

A little background...

2010 40th Anniversary, 34M miles. Just replaced the brake pads (F/R) with factory Akebonos (from Rock Auto). Before I replaced the pads, they (mostly rear) squeal very loudly (when in reverse and light brake pedal). The original pads had a lot of thickness left, but I thought that I would replace them any way because I thought the noise would go away. The new pads exhibit the exact same symptoms. I had about 20 hours of high speed, racetrack miles on the old pads and rotors, which were performing amazingly well.

So my question/opinion: My guess is that the rotors have not been touched and are making the same squealing noise, so, they seem like the underlying issue. I think that the rotors are race hardened and may need to be resurfaced. Does this sound like anything any one has experienced? Or...can someone offer another thing to try.

BTW...I've been working on cars for the past 50+ years and this one has me stumped. Thanks for listening.

should be a relatively cheap attempt to fix the issue

I'd try just re-bedding before re-surfacing the rotors. Re-bedding alone may fix the problem.

3 things.

1. Rebed the pads.

2. Cut the rotors and rebed the pads.

3. Sometimes the pads and rotors don't like one another. It's a combination of the pad material and the grade/alloy of cast iron. Change one or the other and see what happens.

You should hear my 10/8 pads with the RacingBrakes rotors when cold. Finger nails on a blackboard. But I love the stopping power. :tup:

OP, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I used to have an '09 Z and bought her at 50k miles. The brake pads were new when I bought, as this was one of the first things I checked. Whenever I let her sit overnight and start her the next morning, whether going forward or reverse, when applying the brakes, it would make a really loud squeal and was audible even from a few hundred feet away. Once the brakes warmed up, the squealing would go away, so it was only happening on cold starts.

If what the other members suggest don't work, what worked for me was I took out the brake pads and applied a anti-squeal paste on the BACK of the pads (do NOT apply on the actual padding part) and re-installed and squealing went away.

that symptom sounds EXACTLY like insufficient or improper bedding

HOWEVER

I did experience a different issue on my IS300, which is equipped with aftermarket Racing Brake calipers. They used a modified subaru WRX pad which didn't QUITE seat properly, so re-bedding only provided temporary relief. After going back and forth with FIGS (designed the kit), we had to modify a different pad, which ultimately solved the issue.

I suspect that you are not going to need to do anything so drastic as you are using OEM calipers and rotors instead of some cobbled together aftermarket kit

The fix
1. Get in the car
2. Start car, turn on sound system
3. Turn up sound system
4. Reverse out of garage, parking bay
5. Proceed and then moderate sound system volume

Easy fix, no $'s

BTW, my OCD wants to say "brakes squeal", not sure what squeel's ... apologies - I'm an ID10T
