Question about brake grease and cleaning

Hey guys I am in the middle of re greasing the back of brake pads and hardware since I have been having some squeaking going on. It’s on my g37S

Default Question about brake grease and cleaning

Hey guys I am in the middle of re greasing the back of brake pads and hardware since I have been having some squeaking going on. It’s on my g37S coupe, same calipers as the Z sport. Anyway my first question is the brake grease I got here. Will this be ok to use on the shims and back of the pads along with the edges and a bit on that outer spring plate? Permatex ultra brake parts lube synthetic. I was afraid I got put too much on the shims on one side so I re did it. Will that stuff hurt the rubber piston boots? I tried to research but couldn’t find much specifically on the piston boots being affected.

Also I was wondering is there a good way to try to clean the edge of the piston that contacts the brake pad? And also the boot? They look pretty dirty but I am not sure if I should touch it. I just scrubbed around it.

Brake grease is just a high heat tolerant grease. It's fine to coat the back of brake pads, however, I prefer anti-squeal (it's essentially just liquid rubber) it works better.

Buy spray brake cleaner, it works great to clean brake parts including the pistons.

Awesome thanks! I took for a test drive and sounds like there is a low grinding sound or something. Not really loud but I can feel and hear it. But I’m too lazy to take my wheels back off tonight. everything looks good from the outside. I’ll have to check it out on Saturday lol

To clean around the boots and pistons. Use a nylon tooth brush and brake cleaner. You only need a thin layer of grease on the skims. Too much causes a mess and catches dirt.

If you use the anti-squeal as mention. Don't put it on too thick. It will cause other problems with brake pedal feel.

Also; that grease should be ok for caliper slide pins- but read carefully,,,as some will cause the rubber sleeve to swell & seize up.
Found this out the hard way,using some house formula from work.
As long as it’s compatible w/rubber,,,you’ll be ok (more like a high heat dialectical grease)
Also as above mentioned-Antiseize compound would work & stay better,,,but I only use it on the backside of rear parking brake shoes & wheel studs,,,not on the actual disc brake pad ears,,,as they will slide on the stainless snap in hardware.....as Rusty mentioned-too much can cause problems.

I use the purple stuff with no problems. You got to quit sniffing it before applying it!

Remember with the anti-squeal apply a thin coating and let it cure overnight. That should help reduce the risk of it fouling the piston.

I heard the reason brake grease is used on disc brakes is that drum brakes require it (where shoes rub against backing plate) so most mechanics already had it in their toolbox when discs came along. Something was needed to "glue" shims, brake grease does a good job, why not use it.

Not sure it's true, but it sounded good when I heard it.

Oh god, guys.... I did the most idiotic thing ever. So I kept dropping my hair pin clip in there and having to take all the hardware and the inboard pad back out to keep retrieving it, in my frustration the last time I just found out I put the pad in backwardsand that’s the Grinding I heard on my test drive down the street. Anyway. My question is will it be ok still??? it seems like there isnt any damage to the rotor besides being greased up. But I am gonna take it off now to check it out and take some pics for you guys. If I need to replace do I need to replace all my pads and rotors on each wheel now if I need to replace my rotor and pad on my one wheel? The little latch on the shim is bent slightly so I may need to replace that at least if I can’t bend it back cuz it won’t stay in place.

It appears you didn't go hard enough to have excessive damage. Flip it around and see what happens after cleaning all of the grease off of the rotor.
