Steering wheel adjustment to make it heavier.
2 Attachment(s)
For me the steering wheel feel is too light especially after SPL'ing all the bushings this winter. I saw in a post that there was an adjustment that could be made to make it heavier. Sure enough, there is.
This is from the ST section from the service manual; Attachment 129197 This is what the adjusting screw looks like on the rack; Attachment 129196 Take a sharpie and mark the nut for original location as a reference. Using a 24mm wrench tighten clockwise, 1/8 of a turn. 1/4 turn to the right will bottom it out, steering his heavy and sticky and there will be no return to center. 1/8, +/- an RCH seems to be about right. . |
Bad move. That's for adjusting the play between the teeth in the rack. Not for changing the way the rack feels. You are loading the teeth on one side. :shakes head: RTFM! Starts on ST22.

Sorry about the "Steeting" title. I guess the mods can't change that...
Thanks, FYI, that screw has an adjustment range, from page ST 24. 8. Adjust pinion rotating torque with the following procedure. a. Measure pinion rotating torque within ±180° of neutral position of the rack assembly using tools. Stop the gear at the point where highest torque is read. b. Loosen adjusting screw and re-tighten to 5.4 N·m (0.55 kg-m, 48 in-lb), and then loosen by 20 to 40°. Assuming it was installed and setup correctly, 1/8 of a turn is 45° |
Shouldn't SPL bushings make the steering feel "heavier" since all mush is removed and you have more direct connection to the road through a solid suspension?
Also, if you want a "heavier" feeling you should get a smaller steering wheel, which mechanically increases effort and it saves weight, i suppose? |

Increase caster can make it feel heavier.

you turn that big nut too tight and your are going to have to turns your wheel back to straight every time you make a turn. It's going to wear out the rack gears/teeth. I wouldnt recommend turning it too far.

Caster is set at: Left 7.30 Right 7.39 Putting in all the SPL stuff made it lighter, and tighter and more responsive... Next alignment will definitely see more caster as I make changes for new wheels, tires and track, 18x10.5 275/35/18 should help. Anyone ever play with a; Heidts Adjustable Power Steering Valves PS-101 ? |
