Brake Squeal (Sprt Pkg)

Okay. So since I made you feel bad, let me put your mind at ease. I have a 2007 911 with OEM brakes (drilled rotors and semi-metallic pads). The brakes are less than a year old as I replaced everything except calipers last summer. They go through phases of squealing like hell. They started their **** again recently. A few random hard/fast stops over the course of a day of driving (total of maybe three or four) helped a bit. I recommend doing the same. I've got the killer low-speed squeal to a minimum but it will likely flare up in the next week.

My Porsche mechanic soaked the pads in some kind of fluid for a day before installing them. Supposed to help keep things quiet. But like I said before, wheel and tire cleaner will strip chemicals and what-not out of the pads. I'm sure this exacerbated the issue for me. I'll be getting replacement pads once a year if that's what I have to do to keep from going nuts.

What did you mean by soaking the pads? Like literally soaking them in a bucket of solution? Never heard of that.

Yup. I have no idea what it is. I didn't ask. Probably some secret Porsche mechanic remedy. I wish I could've had him do it again recently. They need it. Badly.

I've had the same issues on mine...

A few instances it turned out to be rocks, dealer removed, things were fine...

It makes the same sound as my pos wrx did at one point, I fixed that car by pushing the dust shields back a bit with just a small amount of force.

This car makes the same stupid sounds, kind of a tiny pot metal like sound...

Going to try new pads (ebc redstuff) + 2 piece rotors, and push the stupid dust shields back a bit. Fingers crossed. I'm still lost on the genius idea that the dust shields need to be so close to other moving surfaces. More of an annoyance than anything else. It's the only part of this car I don't understand why it was engineered to be a perpetual annoyance on purpose it seems.

BTW: I've ran EBC redstuff on two other vehicles for daily driving, not sure why they're taboo on the nissan forums, but they've always been great on other cars I've owned, and I don't drive it like it's a prius.

There are all kinds of brake quiet solutions on the market, even had techs use wd40 to soak rear pads on MB. None of them manufacture recommended and none of them would I use. At some point you have to accepte that friction creates a harmonic and a harmonic is noise, typically the more aggressive the pad the more noise. So either get a low friction quiet pad or deal with the sports brake pads.

That said the akebono are typically one of the quieter pads. Your Porche is an example of true German sports brakes, the German tend to actually use quiet an aggressive pad OEM. Even AMG owners manuals had to put in their literature your sport brakes will make noise and that is normal, after all the repeat comebacks of their cars with noise complaints.

Did you try lubricating the sides of the pads? The can get bound up on the inside of the caliper when braking and cause a squel. I see it at work on occasion.
