Caliper Compressor

Hey everyone. I searched but found people using flathead screwdrivers and the old pads .... For those with Akebono Calipers, what brake caliper compressor would you recommend?

I installed pistons by hand after rebuild they slide right in. You have to use a little of the red grease on the piston from rebuild kit

Rusty 02-15-2016 09:07 PM

What are you trying to do? Just replacing pads or rebuilding calipers?

Replacing rotors and pads. I have a compressor but it's for single piston calipers.

For replacing pads with the calipers still on the car. I use the old pads and use a small pry bar to push the pistons in. With the calipers off the car. Old pads and a 4" C-clamp. With a 4 piston set-up. 2 C-clamps. One on each side.

They make the right tool for the right job...

Search for: Brake Caliper Compressor

Can get one pretty cheap, and is better for your brake pistons than cramming an old pad against it.

You have one?

I was going to get one like that. But then thought that I can change out the pads just as quick using my method. Still might pick one up just to have.

Take out one pad (not both), use two large flat screwdrivers as levers to push the piston in, slide in a new pad. Repeat for the opposite side of the rotor. Repeat for the other side of the car.

If you had to use a socket/wrench, you did it wrong ;)

yah, i never bothered to get this tool either. i too just use a clamp and a small prybar... more like a large flat head screw driver size. works fine for me. :D

I put the pad sideways and pry out, it's kinda shítty, but doable

DeliriousClam 02-18-2016 10:05 AM

Figure I'd ask this here since it's kinda related. Are the rear Akebonos single or dual piston?

  • Front: 4 piston (two each side)
  • Rear: 2 piston

Seconded. I use this caliper spreader as well. Really simplifies swapping the pads, especially in the front.

Burnt350 02-18-2016 01:41 PM

I shall procure. :)

Since your replacing pads/rotors.

Before removing the pins holding in the pads, put your flat head between the rotor and pad, pry outwards, then remove pins, pull out pads, then caliper and so on.

If it's any consolation, after reading this thread, I also bought it this morning (… and I also have three tool chests full of tools). I suspect it will beat fussing with C-clamps.

Let me know when you have grown out of the garage and into the laundry room. :shakes head: I have my stick/tig welder, mig welder and a table saw in there. :shakes head:
