Upgrading to Akebonos? Suggestions
 

Hey guys, been searching around on the forums a bit and couldn't seem to find exactly what I wanted. I've have been looking into upgrading to the Akebonos for a while now and had a few questions. Recently i've been doing a lot more canyon driving and will begin to do some track/autox events. Do you think this will be an upgrade worth spending my money on or should I wait for a BBK later? Keep in mind I may have a FI TT kit installed in a few years possibly.

How many of you guys are running a TT setup with Akebonos and is there a problem with that?

If I do end up going with the Akebonos what do I need to worry about besides the dust shields? I currently have the Z1 SS lines that fit both the sport and non sport models. I found a set of red calipers for $1050 shipped, is that too expensive?

I know, I should have got the sports package in the first place! :nutswinger:

I just upgraded to the Akebonos from stock. Big difference. The only difficult part was cutting the dust shields if that is even considered difficult. To me, the upgrade is worth the $$...I bought the Z1 package and couldn't be happier. If you do any kind of spirited driving, you'll notice the difference. I was in a similiar situation as I don't have the sport package (no one had it at the time) so I have had to build it on my own. The price on the calipers is in the ball park...if that's all you plan on replacing.

I upgraded to the Akebonos about a year ago and love them. I had bad brake fade once but I think it was the fluid. I have changed to Castrol SRF plus added brake ducts and have had no more problems. I've been using yellow stuff pads, they are dusty but worked great as a street/track pad. I just received carbotech 10/8 and new rotors to try to get more out of them on the track next time.

the banjo bolts on the sport brake lines are shorter.....you will either need new brake line or new (shorter) banjo bolts.

I also have this option from a wrecked G37s that came into our yard. Down side is that they have infinity on the calipers. I guess it doesn't matter really.

Here's what I foresee: if you're going FI down the road, you're going to want beefier brakes. I upgraded and it definitely is a bang for the buck. And yes, don't make the mistake of NOT getting the shorter banjo bolts as I did because I stripped a caliper threading. :ugh:

As for forking over a grand for red calipers, it'll still be cheaper to get the Z1 Motorsports Akebono brake package in which you'll also receive rotors, pads, AND red calipers if you opt for them.

Send them to Mike Thepowdercoater.com, He will make them any color you want and your choice of logo. I bought infinity ones from Z1 and they shipped them straight to make.
