Opinions of new 3D model of Cubby Tablet Mount for 370z?

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum, but I had an idea. I used to be a product designer and figured I would take crack at designing a integrated mount to replace the cubby in the Z. This will be based off of a 7in Samsung Galaxy tablet.

When finished I can post the model file online for everyone to print one out for themselves using a 3d printer. Then you could just sand and custom paint it yourself. This isn't for money, I won't be selling them, I am just curious to try it out and want to share it with others.

If you or anyone else has tried making a cubby mount before please post your experience with some do's and dont's to help me along. I would really appreciate it. I will be modeling it in SolidWorks, so if you want the files as I go just let me know and I can send them.

Goals,
Flush integration with old cubby.
Removable tablet mount.
Integrated charging.
Potentially integrated aux cable.
Sleek finish.
Durable build.

Questions,
I know nothing about wiring, is there a way to plug the tablet into the back of the stock stereo and power it without using one of the cabin's 2 12v outlets.

Finally, when I finish the model and post it as proof, I might need a little help financially to print the first one. Not now but maybe later I could use some help. Or if you have a 3d printer, I would be happy to send you the final file so you can print it out and test it and provide some feedback.

Thank you very much, I am excited about this little side project,

With thanks,
Scott

Also, ideally, I want it to just snap in, with no cutting, and no glue ect, so that it can be removed without a scratch in the future.

Thanks
Scott

I'm interested in the same thing. I don't have a 3d printer, but know someone who does. (I have no idea how or what it takes to operate one). Point is, I'd be interested in helping to refine a design for all of us to use for free. I saw another forum member mastered it and now sells them for 370 bucks. I'd like to see an easy solution for all of us to use.

What about...

What about a couple of tabs on the back of your insert that could accept a pair of panel clips to hold it in? Just two small holes at the back of the existing cubby would be all it takes to accept the clips. I agree with not altering anything to put the cubby back to stock but I could maybe live with two real small holes.

Interesting project. Subbed for updates.

Are you going to digitize an OEM cubby and modify that or start from scratch?

Edit: Wiring info is in the FSM. If you can't figure it out, one of the resident audio gurus should be able to tell you where the good places are to get power.

I'd like to do something like this, but slightly angle the screen toward the driver like the GTR if possible. Ark, not sure what my plan of attack will be. At this point, I plan to get some free time, disassemble my cubby, have it scanned, modify the design and print a new one from scratch. (I dare not make any permanent modifications to my Z!

This pic is from Sidewaysautosalon.com out of Austin. I requested a quote from them. I'll post the price that they get back to me with. (It may be easier to just buy it - but that defeats the purpose of this thread!)

I would love it, start a kick starter fund =p

I'm definitely interested, too. I really want to get an Android tablet in there, but I haven't gotten past the "looking into it" stage. I am, however, beginning to get tired of seeing that cubby door stare at me every day...

A route a few of us went was using the OEM Navigation panel (Nissan - 68520), and then filling in the open areas at our choice. This allows for a 7" screen to be mounted of your choice.

I saw that... And it looks pretty nice. How much does that piece cost?

It can vary, about $300-400 I believe.

How would you get around not having access to the buttons on the side of your typical tablet (power & volume)?
