my budget is 1000-1500,

upgrade the sound quality in the car,

would this work?

if i keep the stock player in the car, and replace the speakers with better ones

Change the stock headunit along with the speakers and you will definitely hear an improvement over the stock system. An aftermarket unit will have more sound controls and will probably put out more power to the speakers versus stock. It's been awhile since I've shopped for stereo equipment, but I think you can upgrade both for your budget. If you want navigation on your headunit, that will bump up the cost a few hundred.

$1500 for the whole system is definitely possible. My system cost about that much. I have "good speakers" and decent amps. I suggest getting a head unit. IT allows more audio control. I'm not a fan of line converters so that's a major plus to a HU. Put that $35 towards a HU.

Check out custom sounds in Austin. I had an alpine deck, amp, and components installed for about 1k. Not top of the line by any means but you dont need to spend a ton of money with the limited space we have in our Z's to get some good sound.
I wil be building a cubby hole box and putting some focal 5.25" in them. I am also going to purchase a Rockford Fosgate self-amped sub box.
Heads up to you guys considering any speaker install for the cubby.... Do not use 6X9's there. Not enough air for them.
