Stealth Subwoofer!

EDIT****: PLEASE POST IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. DON'T JUST VOTE

If you guys have never heard, JL has a product line called Stealthbox. They basically design a vehicle-specific subwoofer enclosure that is:

1. Obviously Stealth
2. Takes up very minimal space
3. Usually will be covered when you use the factory cargo cover.

The con's are that it's a bit expensive, and it comes with a JL sub(which you can always switch out if you like).

Just to give you an idea, I bought a stealthbox for my Xterra and it was $600. For that, I got a tight-hitting subwoofer box that took up basically no cargo room(Nissan Xterra Stealthbox by JL Audio), and I can use my cargo cover to hide it.

I have not seen a Stealthbox on their website for the 370Z. This was the case with the newer Xterra, but one of the forum members contacted JL, and they replied that if there was enough interest, they would build it, so he went back on the Xterra forum and rallied support and got people to email JL expressing their interest, and JL developed it.

What I am trying to say is, who would be interested in this type of product? I know there is the Z enclosure, but that is by no means stealth, and that's just asking for broken glass.

The sub that came with my Stealthbox, coupled with my Alpine PDX 1.600, hurts my ears even at half power, and sounds great also.

bigaudiofanat 10-07-2009 06:41 AM

I personaly would rather have a Z enclosure, or a regulars trunk box. Never was a huge fan with JL not to forget mentioning they like to have a high price tag.

I mean there price tag is going to be arounf say 500-800 just for the box and sub. Than you have to buy a amp. When I can get a nice Z-enclosures a better sub than JL and a nice amp for around that and still have money left over for the power wire and such.

Need more comments guys. If you guys want this, there has to be more support than just clicking on the poll.

mikeyt750 10-07-2009 07:06 PM

I would love one!! Big fan of JL here!

dcrew1x 10-07-2009 07:14 PM

I'd be interested :excited:

antennahead 10-07-2009 08:57 PM

I NEED a stealthbox. I can't take up the trunk space that a Z enclosure occupies..... not much, but getting 2 sets of golf bags back there IS important to me. I also need the luggage space when traveling. A stealthbox that fits inside the spare tire itself would work great. One member, many months ago, even built one himself and it works great. If no one comes out with one soon, I will be paying a lot of money to have the local shop fabricate one for me out of fiberglass.

Edited my first post, cmon guys, if you want this, you have to post and show more support than just clicking the poll. If and when we need to email JL showing our interest in such a product, how are we going to do that when people aren't even posting and showing their support in this thread, let alone take the time to email them.

TXSpeedDemon 10-08-2009 09:08 PM

I would love one that could go in the little pockets behind the seats and hold at least 1 JL 8W7. The trunk is so small already I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger on a Zenclosures type box. Decided to start with suspension upgrades while I wait in hopes that something like this gets made.

coaxial 10-12-2009 10:41 AM

I would love one... But only if it would fit a W7

The Weapon 10-12-2009 10:52 AM

depends on the stealthiness of it. Z Enclousures isn't stealth to me. It's out in the open and takes up space. If it's hidden somewhere, and a truely a stealth box then yes.

FuszNissan 10-12-2009 12:37 PM

We used to put them in the corners of the turnk, back by the talilights in those little cubby holes, on the 350Z

kenchan 10-12-2009 12:53 PM

if it can fit inside the spare with ample sound i'd be interested...but damn i'll have to take out the stereo AGAIN. :D hahaha.

carfr3ak 10-12-2009 09:09 PM

I doubt they will design it for the spare area(No big company is going to design something for the masses that requires the permanent removal of spare tire). It's made to take up minimal space.

All of their boxes are made to look as stealth as possible while sacrificing very minimal space. I am not sure what kind of design they will do, and what kind of sub they will be able to use.

kenchan 10-12-2009 11:02 PM

no no, i mean inside the spare like the bose sub. the spare tire is still in the car. im not a bass head, i just want something to fill the void and to lessen the burden on the front woofer.

speedfreak28 10-12-2009 11:14 PM

For the money of A JL stealth enclosure I could builda fiberglass enclosure any way you want, carpet it and use a higher quality sub. Me and Bigaudiofanatic were talking about designing an enclosure about a month ago. I could even throw some carbon fiber in teh mix.:yum:

carfr3ak 10-12-2009 11:39 PM

If you can do it to the specs that the sub needs, then more power to you. Most, if not all of the JL Stealthbox's are made from fiberglass custom molded to fit wherever they choose to install the stealthbox. They know the best way to design the enclosure so you get the maximum benefit of the sub.

Not knocking on you, I just rather have a well known and respected audio company to make the Stealthbox for me since they have all the technical know-how. I would do a custom fiberglass box as a 2nd resort, and the Z enclosures as a last resort.

Months ago, April I believe, a member here made a fiberglass enclosure that sits down inside the spare. There is a shop in Atlanta that used to post here, that did the internal volume and ran the numbers for such an enclosure, was around .6 cu ft. There are a few thinline/slimline subs that will work in that size enclosure............ and you don't loose use of the spare.

JL also makes a sub that goes into the spare tire for the Mazda 3. If they could do that it would be perfect. You do lose a little bit of dept but to me that's stealth. It would look completely stock.

I have a stealth box in my car, made by my friends dad, with two 6.5" kickers. I painted it black to match the foam. Those are subwoofers by the way.

Nice, now that's what I'm talking about.... it sits down in the spare correct?
This can also be done with one 10" thinline sub. How do the 2 6"s sound?

Yes, it sits in the spare tire. You can put one shallow 8" or one 10" sub. The two 6.5" complement the speakers I put up front, it's not loud like two 10s you know, but sounds perfect inside the 370z.

Cool. Is the cabinet fiberglass? I assume the part we can't see that sits in the spare is round. Approximately how low do your two 6" go? I'm a rock, jazz, and blues guy, so 30hz or so would be sufficient for me.

No, it's wood and yes, it's round and the subs sit flush with the top. The subs are about 2-3/4" deep. The guy who made it is a carpenter and he is really good with wood.

You might have a market for these, think he wants to make and sell any more lol How low do you think it goes BTW?

John

jagodago 10-15-2009 09:51 PM

Jowe, how does putting the carpet down effect sound quality. I know that at sub frequency ranges it shouldn't make a huge difference but I am just curious if there is anything weird that goes on. I was looking at a memphis shallow mount 10 for this area and since you have paved the way any insight into issues would be great.

It doesn't make any difference with or without the carpet, at least with those subs.

Rhinetom 10-16-2009 09:06 AM

Yes for the Stealth Enclosure!

Nice 2fast!

G Fo12ce 11-05-2009 11:25 PM

I'd be interested at a reasonable price and if it still left the trunk area open. Maybe like the Bose sub does.

vipor 11-06-2009 08:17 AM

I'd give it a shot.

Rhinetom 11-06-2009 08:19 AM

Stealth Sub? Yes. Make it, I will buy.

dcrew1x 11-07-2009 08:00 PM

According to the poll there is definitely interest for this project. Any word on making it a reality?

That's a good question. I agree with you, the market is there....... you could even make it with baffle choices, two 6", one 8", one 10", or one 12". Thinline 8,10, and 12s will definitely fit in a small drop in enclosure that fits down inside the spare.

le6tat 11-15-2009 02:30 PM

zenclosures are cool but they take up way too much trunk space. there has to be a better solution than that. I like to drive but sometimes I take things with me...

It looks like JL Audio is working on the 370z "Stealthbox" as we speak: JL Audio Stealthbox System

This guy seems to have the right idea.
http://www.the370z.com/audio-video/3...pare-tire.html
I am actually going to try this method myself once I figure out a way to do it with a 10". The sub I currently have is a RF Punch. However, I think the cone will be too deep, so I might have to spend the cash on a shallow 10", but the idea is perfect.
I really like what member "Jowe" did. He put two 6.5" shallow subs in the spare.

If I can't get that to work this guy has the instructions to do a sub anywhere in the car:
Subwoofer Box Fiberglassing 2 - Nissan 350Z & 370Z Wiki

Looks pretty easy. But then again i'll do anything twice...
I was thinking about what "carfr3ak " said. I agree, and would like to add that maybe we can express where we would like to place a sub as well. There are pleanty of guys out there with the know how and might be able to fabricate something just for the space we suggest?...

Do you "only come out at night"? :p JK

The 8" inside the spare tire will work, and another guy from a shop in Atlanta did the internal volume, and I believe it was in the .6 range. A 10" will work, there are a few examples that are shallow enough to fit. I am leaning towards the Elemental Designs SQ 10:

Elemental Designs

To me, this location seems like such a no brainer. Retains the spare AND use of the trunk for those of us that need that, AND for the "add an aftermarket sub" crowd, it retains the stock look. Hopefully we see this manufactured soon.

Sweet! That's good news! I hope JL ends up finishing the stealth sub enclosure since the 370z is now listed as a project.

"It looks like JL Audio is working on the 370z "Stealthbox" as we speak: JL Audio Stealthbox System"

I hope this 370 box they are working on is a little more "stealth" than the 350 box, lol. It was a nice box, but big and covered the entire area unter the shock tower bar. If they don't make one to drop in the spare tire, I will have one custom made locally.
