What's your opinion about the stock head unit?

I just bought speakers and amps to upgrade, to go along with my subwoofer.
Is replacing the head unit inevitable?

If you just have the basic head unit, and you have installed an amp and sub, i would definitely swap it out. The main thing i would want, would be subwoofer level control in that little car. Sometimes you just have a headache and cant take all that bass. Unless you have an external bass knob on the dash going to your amp to control the subwoofer, i would swap it. Not to mention all the other cool stuff aftermarket double din units can do these days.. Pandora, ipod ingratiation, i think some of the more expensive units even dispense Egg McMuffins in the moring PAST 10am :roflpuke2:

Yea upgrade your deck too without a doubt. The main reason I did it was for more options as in USB drive and blue tooth plus the other goodies you get now with aftermarket. The Versa has the same deck as ours does if that tells you anything about what you have. The same goes with the stock speakers too. Pull em and stick em in a box and toss in your attic.

Yep upgrade your deck, it will give you more options, more output power, and more settings

panchor1 11-19-2014 07:29 PM

Yeah, the speakers are coming out ASAP. I'm really only interested in the audio.
To be honest, I don't really care about a screen, DVD, GPS, Bluetooth, or Apps in the car. Pretty much just sound quality. The rest is all BS to me.

I used to have an Alpine HU in my truck but that didn't really have many equalizer controls to fine tune the speakers. So maybe add a graphic equalizer to the Z's stock HU?

Speakers are:
Infinity Kappa 60.11cs
Amp Rockford Fosgate Punch P400x2

Subwoofer:
JL Audio 10W6v2
Amp JL audio JX500/1

Big, do you know what the specs are on the stock HU or where to find them?

USB means thumb drive and over 1000 songs at your disposal. Blue tooth streaming from your phone is cool too and this comes with your audio requirements.

That's info you're not likely to find available. At best would be a guess.

bigaudiofanat 11-21-2014 08:25 AM

My best guess would be 8-12 watts RMS coming out of that tinny tin can of a head unit.

I did a Q&D web search for Nissan radio specs/watts and came up empty-handed. :(
Bose doesn't publish specs, either.

I wouldn't normally do this, but in this case I can't resist...

Since you've already upgraded the power. The only reason to upgrade the HU is for more options... HD Radio, USB, etc. If you don't see yourself using these save the money and time to install.

Biggest bang for your buck will be speakers and power.

Personally I never saw a reason to drop big bucks on car audio with road noise, off center driver position and speaker positioning issues. You'll never come close to what a home stereo will be. Plus I don't use the Z for road trips.

If you do want to go for the best sound there are some amazing EQs (digital sound processors) on the market now, but it won't be cheap.
