$3500 for Tech Package or Aftermarket?
I was looking at the packages and was curious what you Audio/Multimedia folks thought of the value of the tech pack vs what the same money can buy on the aftermarket. What do you think, $3500 for Nav, Bose, Backup Cam, and HomeLink Auto-Dim Mirror?

I would think a reputable shop could do a lot with $3500 and I'd imagine the end result would be superior to the factory option in nearly every way.
Homelink is easy to add.. I just installed one in my Z for about $85 in parts.. and I got a mirror with an integrated compass.

No reason to pay that much. The only reason I would ever consider factory tech package is the slick look of the factory navigation. However, for the price, I'd rather spend less and get more with an aftermarket HUD. Get a backup cam with the HUD, and go ahead and upgrade the base speakers while you're at it. Mirror is easy to purchase aftermarket - there are a variety of non-OEM options.

Most oem "premium radios" are crap. The only half decent ones are the one in my Lexus vehicles. If that's all the tech package is giving you, then I'd save it for aftermarket equiptments. With two thousand, you can get some really nice equiptments.

ALWAYS aftermarket when it comes to sound and electronics. I think the only factory "upgraded" stereo system that i have ever thought was really awesome, was one of the other sales guys that works here. Hes got a 2011 M3, and BMW put 17 speakers in that little car, including subwoofers under the front seats!

Thanks for your input guys! That's kind of what I was thinking but I've never really priced, or really know anything about, car audio equipment.

i got the base with sport package and did the nav, HU, rear view cam, home link mirror aftermarket. considering people having issues with BT connectivity (need to wait 10min to stream? wtf ), i would never do the factory tech package even if i was to do it over from scratch. also updating maps is easy to do if aftermarket, and just being able to swap headunits whenever you feel like it is an added bonus..well at least to me. |

yah, check the audio section for recommendations. if you want nav, i recommend you get
a kenwood with nav (garmin) built-in. i use a nuvi + the obd2 gauges off of it so i run a pioneer doubledin with BT. works great. backup cameras are pretty cheap, some go from $15 up to like $200. you can source the home link gentex mirrors from amazon for like $200-250 and install it yourself. also check ebay for any deals or 2nd hands. |

I got a DDX7701HD and I love it. It's a non Nav unit. If I need gps, all I do is plug the phone in and use the map app from the head unit. Saved me a few hundred bucks that way. The Head Unit got all the features I could ever ask for, and it only cost me 470 dineros.

I think most people's concerns with going aftermarket for AV stuff is that they're worried it won't look clean and will stick out too much. I can tell you right now, for $3500 you can get yourself a killer system installed professionally and have it sound a TON better. Also, the OEM Nav system is the same recycled bits from like 10 years ago. You can do better.
