Default ASWC Wiring Clarification

Hey guys, just got a 2014 Red 370z Manual with sports and the first thing I did was install my Kenwood DNX8120. Made sure I had the ASWC on hand so I wouldn't have to take the dash apart again later. I read on a few different threads that the diagram that on the AXXESS document for installation may be incorrect. Is this true?

Screen Shot 2014-08-12 at 9.44.31 PM.jpg

So does the Gray/Red wire go to the pink wire? (pin 6)
Does the Gray/Blue wire go to the Blue wire? (pin 16) - There are 3 blue wires on the vehicle barnes.

I do not understand step 5. "Connect pin 15 of the vehicles harness to chassis ground." It appears to me that Pin 15 is empty, so what exactly am I connecting?

photo-2.JPG

I spent two hours trying to figure this out without success so I just put the dash back together.

Also, it is extremely cramped back there. The 8120 has a ton of wires! How do you guys manage all those for a nice comfortable fit back there?

Lastly, how do you guys make those connections to the vehicle harness? Just strip some of the wire insulation to join the ASWC wire into it?

Thanks in advance! Learning a lot on this forum.

Welcome to the forum!

I can't speak to the 2014 wiring colors, but I'm sure Big will chime in soon enough. He's fairly active in this section and does a large number of installs on the Z.

The wiring can be a bit cramped, but it isn't necessarily unmanageable. When I still had a Kenwood I trimmed off some of the excess length on unused wires (I probably left 6" - 8" or so for future use), bundled them together, and taped them off....then just stuffed them back there as best as I could when I put the radio in. With my Pioneer I didn't even bother trimming, I just bundled the wires and taped them off.

As for the steering control wire I physically cut the wire (you will obviously want to verify the wire before doing this!). If you go this route strip the ends, feed a piece of heat shrink tubing over the wire, splice in the wire from the ASWC, solder the new connection, and then shrink the tubing over the splice. Take your time and try not to go crazy with this as you really don't have any slack to work with unless you're going to extend the wires.

Soldering is going to be the most reliable, but if you aren't comfortable doing it (or don't have a suitable iron) you could alternatively use a barrel connector or wire nut. I don't recommend using any kind of vampire tap as the steering control wire is a little too thin to make any kind of a good connection.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

I actually just did this tonight. You need to tap into pin 15 and ground it along with the ground lead from the aswc. Pin 15 acts as ground for pin 6 and pin 16 if you look in the service manual.

There are two configuration listed on aswc website. One shows gray/red to peach wire (pin 6) and gray/blue to blue wire (pin 16). The second configuration just swap the two wires to the opposite pins. I'm not sure what the difference is, maybe the base and Bose system is different. I used the first configuration with my Kenwood and it auto detect the HU and programmed all the buttons for me.

I'd use disconnect able wire to wire on pin 6 and 16 just in case you need to swap them.

It's been quite awhile since I installed mine, but I think pin 15 is the black underneath the pink wire. If I remember correctly, their diagram is "looking" at the plug side, not the wire side.

I could be completely off though.

Ya pin 15 is right under pin 6. Cut the wire from the harness and ground it.

Hey thanks for all your reply guys!

I concur with TreeSemdyZee, the diagram is looking at the plug side.

So we can all agree on Gray/Red wire going to Pink wire (Pin 6)

And Gray/Blue wire going to Blue wire (Pin 16)

I also retract my previous statement that Pin 15 looks empty, it does in fact appear to be under the Pink wire.
__________________________________________________ ____________

So I am just confused on the last part...Pin 15 (Ground)

Do I just...

1.) Detach the Black wire from the vehicle harness and ground it from there?

Or

2.) Do I connect the black wire from the ASWC harness and connect it to the black wire on the vehicle harness? (Because I already connected the Black wire from the ASWC harness to the "center" screw behind where the storage compartment would go to ground it)

Both leads need to be grounded.

Here's what I did for my 2014 with a Kenwood DDX470. Some pins had to be moved around to match the vehicle harness, but it works perfectly now:

Alright...so I thought everything was connected correctly because I was getting lights on the ASWC-1 unit. This is what I had...

Gray/Red wire going to Pink wire (Pin 6)

And Gray/Blue wire going to Blue wire (Pin 16)

Pin 15 is the black wire and I have that grounded.

So with the setup above I could only get the volume up and volume down buttons to work on the steering wheel via auto program.

I called AXXESS and they advised that I simply switch the setup above.

Meaning...

Gray/Red to Pin 16
&
Gray/Blue to Pin 6

Then to hold the reset button down for 3 seconds and wait till it goes steady then hold the volume up button until the light goes out.

Hopefully that will work out. Ready to put this behind me!!

Can anyone advise if this will work?

If memory serves me, that sounds correct, but it has been a while

I actually had to keep the original setup

Gray/Red wire go to the pink wire (pin 6)
&
Gray/Blue wire go to the Blue wire (pin 16)

Ultimately it came down to changing my ground location.

Originally I had the ASWC ground and the vehicle ground at the same location. The rep from AXXESS says this causes some issues. So I had one ground on the center screw from behind the cubby and the other ground to the top right hole where the radio would mount on to. (Basically anything that is metal, I found this to be the closest location)

After that I had to manually program the unit. I found the instructions at the following link. I had to start on page 19. Just make sure you read carefully.

http://www.metraonline.com/files/pro...INST10_web.pdf

Now I am very happy to report that my volume up and down, seek up and down, and source buttons work!

(I forgot to mention since I had a Kenwood, make sure you have the 3.5mm cable connected and the brown wire from the ASWC going to the blue/yellow wire)

Also make sure you have all the connections secure! When I tried to program it multiple times and saw it was not working I went back and checked my connections. Sure enough the brown wire mentioned above came loose.

When in doubt solder. It's weird that a lot of members are saying they can't get the ASWC to do auto programing for all the buttons. Mine fired up for the first time, auto detect and programed everything without a hitch.

I had to reverse the wires from the settings given in the AXXESS booklet but auto tune worked for me also.
