how much dynamat?
 

For those of you that did dynamat or something similar to the back hatch area of the Z.. any rough ideas how much is needed? 50sqft? 100? Thinking specifically for the floor and fender wells. Wanted to put order some but didn't want to waste money on too much
Did some searching but couldn't really find an answer.

Ask big audio, but if I had to guess, 20sqft may due the trick

doubt you will need much more than 25 sq ft. dynamat alone is just good for vibration control, if you want to eliminate road noise you need to use a closed cell foam and vinyl barrier, you can get everything you need cheap hereSound Deadener Showdown - Your Source for Sound Deadening Products and Information

I am going to agree with speed. I will say that after laying down dynamat in most of my car I noticed it is a bit more sluggish on pickup but it is much quieter than it was. You can go to the sky and back for getting rid of noise but at the price of weight that is the thing. To me the z is pretty quiet already. After driving in one for 3 days and getting back into mine the z seems very quite.

the only thing that drives me nuts is in my driver side door at highway speeds it will buzz..like to vibrating wires are touching. It's very annoying and if I knew of a shop that I could trust to take the door panel off and put it back on without something else be wrong when i get the car back then I'd use that CCF from the link.

hmm ok cool.. I was really going for the vibration control (for soon to be installed system) the road noise doesn't bother me much.. thats what loud stereos are for anyway.. :)

Speed couldn't be more right... Completely covering your car with dynamat is pretty much useless.

Dynamat is great for what it does (stops large surfaces from vibrating) but it is not designed for absorbing sound. Get some good closed cell foam (Teklite, Ensolite, Neoprene) to deaden the road noise. Wallpapering your car with dynamat is only going to make you look silly.

My Sound Dampening Thread

It is not useless worked fine for me made everything quieter than what it was and maid my drive more enjoyable. It is not only the product but how you use it.

Dynamat won't make your car more QUIET, its purpose is to absorb VIBRATION by adding MASS to a metal panel that is vibrating. I'd try putting the subs in your car first, then look for any vibration and add as necessary. I actually didn't have any issues with vibration in the trunk, when I see a lot of these installs with the trunk floor matted I think its pretty pointless, that will never vibrate and make any noise. A lot of times you get issues with things like the hatch or parts around there that could be helped. But honestly, I've matted a whole car before when I didn't know better and it really does little to combat road noise. Open/Closed cell foam does a much better job and blocking sound and quieting your drive. One thing that has always been effective for me was putting foam in the doors between the plastic panel and the door metal if there are open gaps, fill it all with a sound absorbing foam. Wheel wells COULD be useful to mat if the metal was straight up exposed to the road, since debris would hit the metal and cause a sound when doing so, that would be muffled by the metal having the mat on it, but they're not really exposed, there's a plastic wheel well piece, which is really where all the road noise is coming from anyway. One other useful mat application is in the doors, the idea is if you have really strong midbass in your door, where lots of air is flowing and the speaker is shaking the door, adding mat will stiffen the door to keep the volume of the door like a sealed box for better acoustics as well as keep the vibration in the speaker itself. This is why you see so many people mat the hell out of their doors.

I used about 80 Sq ft and it made a significant difference in lowering the noise floor. If your going to do it, do the floor, doors, and wheel wells. I also used closed cell foam on all the surface areas too.

The 370Z is not a quiet car at all. The tires that come with it generate a lot of road noise. Sound deadning made the car equivelent to noise level like in a Camary or Honda Accord, maybe a little better.

I find my car much more enjoyable to drive then before. Also I have a Stillen Exhaust with HFC's which made my car much louder than stock and I had a lot of exhaust drone that drove me nuts. That's all gone now since I had sound deadning applied!

I used Rammat instead of Dynamat. Much cheaper and just as effective.
