OEM backup camera - worth it?
Hey guys,
Trying to figure out what options to ask for on my new Nismo and what I can do without... I've been pushing the dealer to find me a model that has the OEM backup camera installed. Couple questions: I've seen the aftermarket offerings and don't really like how bulky they look. What does the OEM camera lens look like and where exactly is it mounted? Does it look out of place 'straight from the dealer'? If so, I may elect to install one myself instead of spending extra cash up front for a stock install from Nissan. Does anyone wish they had actually gone WITH an aftermarket setup? Important thing is I still want the backup camera video feed to show in the rear view mirror. Thoughts? |
The camera itself isn't visible from the rear of the car. It's small and sits adjacent to the hatch release button. It's pointed downward and has a wide angle lense so it doesn't need to be along the long axis of the car.
My first 370 didn't have the OEM backup camera, my new one does. It makes a big difference in a car with very little rear view. My only experience with the monitor in the rear view mirror leaves me with the opinion that it's better than nothing, but quite inferior to the view on the Nav screen. |
I see.. I really like the discretion of the oem camera (if it is in fact not visible from the rear). Are there any lens options that aren't very noticeable? Maybe I could deal without the backup camera for a while...

nismo's still come with the basic stereo? if so, just get a doubledin HU and rear view camera. wire up your rear fog while you're at it too.

The dealer gave me one of their after market cameras. I have it so it works in the mirror and HU in reverse and is selectable in drive. |
I wish I could just start modding from the start but kinda poor (well I will be lol) once I buy the car. The nismos have either standard or bose systems; how does that affect installing a backup camera? Sigh.. maybe it is worth just getting it installed from the factory.

I installed an aftermarket HU in my car and added a $25 ebay rearview camera. It is installed in a light housing that replaces the factory license plate light. It is not an unsightly black blox stuck on the back of the car, looks factory, and you don't notice it is there unless you look for it.
Pic of it in operation: http://www.the370z.com/members/markg...0-imag1046.jpg The camera I have is very similar to this one: Sony CCD Nissan Tiida Livina Car Rear View Camera Back Up Reverse for GPS Radio | eBay |
Nice! Has anyone installed a backup camera and rear view mirror configuration on an OEM Bose system from Nissan? I assume its better to just replace the HU with aftermarket and install the camera then...?

im not sure i like that rearview mirror/tiny lcd setup... not only is it hard to see, it's kinda halfarsed.
most cheap cars in 2018 (was it?) will have those as they are going to be a requirement (per some mag article i read). |
I have the rear camera, the video shows in my home link mirror. Its amazing love it!

any back up camera is worth it

Just had the Nissan home link screen-in-mirror rear camera installed yesterday. Really nice set up with garage door opener and compass.

Datsun who did the install for you? Total cost if you dont mind my asking?

The kit is virtually the same as the GENTEX OEM/MITO AFTERMARKET kits because that's who makes them for Nissan. Says so right on the mirror. |
