Default 3-Way Component Speakers

So I'm thinking of doing a stereo build this summer and I have been doing my research. (Big Audio Fan has been helping me. Thank you!) In my research I have found a lot of advice to leave out the rear speakers. I agree with this if what you are going to use them for is a 4-channel setup.

What I am thinking of doing is using the rear speaker locations to house the midrange speakers in a 3-way component setup. In other words it is still a 2-channel system, but I use the doors for the 6 3/4" mid-bass and the rear locations for the 3" midrange.

Has anyone done this and would there be any sound quality drawbacks to doing this? (More difficult installation is not an issue for me)

Thanks.

I did polk components in the front and 3" in the rear in my previous Z and it worked fine. I like my 4 6x9 set up with tweeters in the dash and B pillars better, but I'm a bass-head so it is more an observation than recommendation.

By putting your mid ranges behind you your going to mess up your sound stage basically where all the sound is coming from and in tern will sound weird having a dedicated set of frequencies coming from behind you rather than in front and where everything else is. I would stick too a 2 way setup in the front.

I personaly love 3 way systems. In most of the cars I have listened to or worked on the best were 3 way systems up front or waveguides.

Anyway, find an installer who can do some fiberglass and put some speakers in your kick panel (by your feet). If done by good installer you can get a really good sound stage.

Something like this would be great. Sadly doesn't look like they make a model for our car. With that said there are plenty of shops/people that could make you a set.
Nissan Maxima Component Speaker Kick Panel [QL-K8002B] - $189.95 : Q-Logic Direct, Car Audio Speaker and Subwoofer Enclosures

Whatever you do. As bigaudio already said, do not use the rear locations.

Definitely no-bueno, especially using the mids from a 3 way set. Your sound stage wouldn't be messed up, it would be non-existent.
