Problems after install, please help.

Yesterday I had some car audio work done.

Pioneer AVH-X1500DVD
Pioneer Gm-8604
Knukoncepts amp kit
Pioneer ts-sw2501s2
Pioneer UD-SW100D enclosure

Today, I am smelling a burning smell. It is not coming from the sub, I know coils can smell like burning. It is coming from the battery box area. What could the issue be? It smells like burning plastic.

Sounds like you somehow bypassed a fuse and have a (partial) short somewhere. I'd pull the IPDM (DIYs on this site; see steering lock fuse links in my sig) and look for burnt/melted parts.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm a little pissed at the shop that installed it. They were 6 hours late, and now this.

There are also some fuses/fusible links near the battery positive terminal. Easy to get to once you pull the trim piece that the lid fits into.

Is there any reason it would have blown a fuse? Incorrect install or something?

SouthArk370Z 02-24-2014 10:51 AM

It's sounds like a bad install but can't be sure without more evidence. It may not be a blown fuse; if something is getting hot enough to put off a burnt smell, there's a real good chance that a fuse was bypassed or not installed. Or the fuse is too big. Or the wiring may not be large enough. Does everything work?

burning smell could mean a lot of things that SA370Z already mentioned (notice my abbrivation usage :D ) and new wiring/switches that are breaking-in.

ive had switches that smelled like a burning plastic while it was perfectly 'normal' :ugh:

i recommend you get it checked out though at the shop. 99% of the time, it shouldn't make any smell.

Everything works, and it's only 300w rms sub and amped component speakers. 4ga wire should be more than big enough, I think. I'll check the fuses tonight.

Oh man... I think I know what it is. If they do an emergency brake bypass to make the video work while driving, do they bypass the fuse? It started smelling when I switched the bypass switch.

We didn't do the wiring, so we don't know how they did it. ;)

I think kenchan has the right idea - take it back to the installer and have them check it out. Until then, don't use the bypass.
