NISMO speaker question

Sorry if this has been posted before.

I've got a 2009 NISMO and the kindest way to describe the audio is "crap." Will my Rockford Fosgate 5x7 speakers fit in the door panels? From what I gather it's a 6.5" stock unit, but I can't be sure. I'd like nothing better than to replace that junk with some of the good stuff I had in the Mustang I just destroyed.

I've also got a Soundstream PCA 4.520 amp that I'm selling to a friend since there's literally no room in this car to mount it...

No not without adapters, (not worth it) I recommend getting a set of component speakers and replace your tweeters in the dash as well for better sound. The polk db 6.5's are a great bang for the buck replacement.

Duc_Z09 02-17-2014 08:38 PM

I was afraid of that. Thanks. Sucks, because I love these speakers...

bigaudiofanat 02-17-2014 08:49 PM

I think you would love their components even more.

I'm not sure I follow; wouldn't he just need to fashion an adaptor for the doors? 6x9s fit the doors, why would 5x7s need cutting (apologies if a stupid question).

The bose equipped z models have 6X9's the base models have 6.5's he could buy the bose adapters and than buy another adapter for them to fit or make them himself but he wouldn't get near as good of sound out of those coaxial's as a set of components.

I'm confused. What's the difference between coaxial and component speakers? Probably a newb question, I know...

What I've got are aluminum cone coaxials with a 0.75" tweeter. I had 4, but 2 of them were ruined when my Mustang's doors got literally torn apart in a crash. I rescued the others from the wreckage.

Ok, that makes more sense. I pulled the 6.5 adaptor plate that came stock in mine and put 6x9s in, which didn't require too much work as that's what the holes are made for. 5x7s would, as you rightly point out, be more work (and probably not worth the effort).

From my understanding, coaxials have the tweeter built into the speaker whereas components have a separate tweeter for you to mount elsewhere.

Just go the easy route and get the coaxial if you new to audio install or want the easy way out. Disconnect the two "tweeter" up front and everything will sound good and balanced.

I went the easy route with my first audio installation. Needless to say it was a bad idea. If you are going to by new speakers and can afford a decent set of component speakers I'd go for them over coaxial.

Is there a reason that components are better than coaxials? More sound refinement/separation or something? In my Mustang I had 4 RF aluminum 5x7 coaxials, each on a separate channel and thought it sounded nice. Maybe I'm too easy to please.

If it helps with your advice, my goal is clarity; not thumping bass or ridiculous volume.

Tweeters are pointed at your head, not your ankles.

Bad idea, with a coaxial all the sound is coming from basically under your leg, with a component your have separation and your tweeters will not be muffled being down low. Not to mention comps will give you better sound quality than a all in one coaxial.

So best bet is to go with 4 new speakers; 6.5 on the bottom and tweeters in the dash... got it.

I'm assuming the speakers themselves are by far the weakest link in the whole system and replacing them should make a night and day difference. Correct?

Yes it will be a night and day difference but do not think of them as 4 speakers think of them as sets one would not sound right without the other.

All right, gotcha. Guess I'll be saving up. Thanks again for the help!

Lots of speaker chat.....Is anyone the least bit interested what his source unit is, and recommend an amplifier to drive the component set??

The head unit is whatever mediocre stock thing comes on the NISMO (and probably base models too). I had a Soundstream PCA4.520 amp that I used in my Mustang, but I just sold it to a buddy because this car has absolutely no space to mount anything without sacrificing the area under the hatch. I'm 30 now, not 21 so I'm going to stick with having luggage space and a spare wheel.:icon17:

RonRizz 02-19-2014 04:48 PM

There are many options to upgrade your sound system that dont require use of your trunk space......If your heart desires. And I'm not sure that age has anything to do with it, by the way.

You got that right, Ron! I'm a forty something tragically-white white guy (formerly nick named "Honky" in 1st grade - Inglewood, CA). Doesn't prevent me from doing this:

Perhaps I am compensating for my honkitude?

Perhaps....I'm pushing 50. Its just something I've done for 30+ years...
Nothing like good, high quality sounds on a long drive, why not make it look nice, too?

H2O_Doc 02-20-2014 06:06 PM

My word. I want.

RonRizz 02-20-2014 06:49 PM

Todays lesson..How to derail a thread in 2 posts...Lol.
Apologies to the OP.
The point I was trying to make is that your components are going to want more power than your head unit can give them to perform at their peak. Its not always about being excruciatingly loud, but good, solid sound quality. There are digital amps out there that are not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes that will enhance your listening experience without cracking the pavement under your car.

Duc_Z09 02-20-2014 08:00 PM

Haha, point taken. I'm all about clean sound while still keeping everything hidden. An amp the size of a pack of smokes sounds like just the ticket... any favorites? The lower the THD the better.

RonRizz 02-21-2014 03:39 AM

you could start with the rockford PBR series. The PBR300x4 is 75 watts x 4 channel, and is around 4 1/2" x 6 3/4".
