Can what you are doing be adapted to work with an ELM (OBD/CAN-to-serial/USB) interface?

Not to put words in 1citron's mouth but it should. While I'm no expert on the PI I know when I was looking at an ELM for my project it seemed rather simple to work with.

Indeed, it is a pretty easy setup consisting of the pi (~$35) and the USB/Bluetooth ELM327 OBD2 cable ( ~$12 on crapbay lol). I used some pre existing python libraries to comunicate to the vehicle and draw the gauges. The time consuming part was or is to create a clean interface with the right aspect ratio for your screen. I could have it setup so that it just logs the data automatically to an sd card (no user interface) and at the end of the day you can read the logs saved on the sdcard by either reading the card on a pc or connecting to the pi via ssh.
