Tablet Dash

I have seen members post up their tablet dash mod, but wanted to share mine. (Early phase) Still waiting for some parts, but had some time to draw up a sample.

1. Want a latch system so I can remove the tablet
2. Want an OEM finish, will have bezel around tablet to match brushed aluminum of interior. (completely remove cubby)

I really like the R35 digital cluster/gps system and end result will look something like that. My version will stand straight up, not follow the curve of the 370z cubby and be at an angle. Below is a rough draft of parts to be made and parts listed.

Dell Venue tablet 8 with Android OS. One main reason I chose this is the micro usb is on the side, so I can adapt power at the bottom of the case to allow it to slide in, and for $200 after tax and shipping I'm with it: Dell Venue 8 and Dell Venue 11 Pro Tablets | Dell

Latch system (push to open): McMaster-Carr

Some hinges and right angle usb adapter. Will keep updating as time goes on.

Over the weekend I will create a Torque Theme to match the 370z cluster/gauges which I will upload for member to download as well.

Update 12/28/2013: Started creating the guages for the Torque app. This is just a sample to get the ideas flowing, it will be a oil pressure guage, with oil temp as well. Might change that to a digital version of oil pressure for quick glance.

Update 1/4/2014: More of the finished guages on the app. Only 4, Top-left: Intake Air Temp, Top-right: Regular Guage (Speed) Bottom-left: Coolant Temp, Bottom-Right: Fuel Pressure.

Started creating the layout for the guages, this is just the first one that I am still modifing, which is in the updated post above. Any input on what guages you would like to see let me know. Each guage will pretty much be designed for each sensor. Let me know what you think so far.

I would suggest that you double check the voltage stage on the dell. It is rather low so the result might not what you're seeking considering the noisy environment in a car install.

I can't get oil temp (apart from the dash gauge). Is that a product of the OBD reader I'm using, the app, or the car?

Yea I'm not 100% positive yet on the PID's I can get from the OBDII port. I just got my tablet last night and wanted to get some measurements before I take it in the shop. I will download the app (Torque) tonight. Is that what you are currently using?

Ok, yea I was going to use my iPad mini, but liked the torque app, seems to have the greatest customization. I'll look through it right now and see what's up.

Oil temperature is available - Mode 1, PID 5C

OBD-II PIDs at Wikipedia

See also the OBD/CAN link in my sig.

DashCommand shows oil temperature under a list of unsupported PIDs. I don't know what that means. In another app, I can amp the gauge to a dashboard, but it doesn't pull any data.

I'm interested in logging data and looking at the relationship between various parameters.

I was wrong about PID 5C being available. :( According to my notes, PIDs 54-C2 aren't used by my 2009. The data is in there somewhere (it's passed to the meter via CAN) but I haven't figured out where.

Damn that sucks, I got a question though. I have created a sample theme for one guage, with the properties.txt in the zip as well. I connect it to my computer and don't see a .torque/the edit folder anywhere. Everyone keeps saying SD card, was I suppose to install the app on an sd card?

XPNSD IT 01-04-2014 02:39 PM

For those wanting to know the above. Once you download an available theme from the torque theme server, the proper directories are created. You can then just replace the files.
