adding a aftermarket volume knob to a headunit

im planning to get the PIONEER AVICX850BT double din headunit but the thing is i want a actual turning volume knob instead of the buttons on the HU itself.. is there anyway i can hook it up to have a universal knob like a bass remote knob to control the volume? oh and i will have a aftermarket steering wheel so i cant adjust the volume there..

Uh I am going to probably go with no on that. Unless you want to setup a circuit board to take the input of a knob and change it to the proper input needed to represent buttons.

You should be able to find a rotary switch unit that will do what you want but, unless your HU has provisions for a wired remote control, connecting it to the HU will probably not be practical. You will probably have to open the unit and solder wires directly to one of the circuit boards, in parallel with the existing switches. But I'm not familiar with your HU - maybe someone else has an easy solution.

dam... maybe ill try to make a volume switch instead of a knob using the oem steering wheel control harness and mount the switch to one of the 3 blanks by the hand brake for easy access ..
