That WickedCAS box is about .7 cubes. Around the same as each chamber in the the Z Enclosures dual-chamber box for 10s or 12s. Really too small for most subs, even the supposed "small enclosure" subs I've found I don't care for the sound in the smallest boxes. I ended up dropping from 2 12s to a single 12 for the larger airspace and I like the sound a whole lot better. Total enclosure "Q" changes significantly, and the sub doesn't sound so overdamped and "peaky". If you listen to mostly house or trance music, it does fine, really... but stuff I like with lower frequency bass isn't satisfying to me.
I'm going to go the in-the-floor route and hope I can get plenty of airspace once I yank the spare tire and all the stupid extra partitioning, etc., but that is certainly more effort and more expense. But I will be able to make my system much more stealthy in the process. It's all a tradeoff. |

Love some detailed pics if you don't mind, Cbtech. You can PM me if you don't want to post them, I'll shoot you my email, whatever. I saw the ones above, great look on those finished panels. Is that floor elevated over the speaker cone by a couple of incheas or what? Personally, I've considered mounting mine basket-out just for the hell... but I don't know.
How much depth were you able to get out of the rear hatch for speaker mounting? I'm considering a couple of 10" deep subs, so I may have to build it up some, but still would end up with more useable trunk space than now, probably. |

Nissan 370Z Forum - Cbtech's Album: Custom Sub Box there are 2 sets of panels that you can see. the first panel sits on top of the box and raises the floor a little over stock height and can be for show since it exposes the speaker. the second set of panels raises the floor another half inch and covers the speaker with a metal grill to protect it. You can drop a bowling ball on it and its safe just dont stab it . The only thing i would change would have been to have the box made wider to allow the sub to sit lower in the gap of the panels. The JL has a pretty far reaching throw and can sometimes knock against the grill of the top panel. Quote:
Another note: with my ONE 10" inch JL sub running at 500 watts RMS it hits really hard which in turn places a lot of strain on the alternator. When the car is running and it gets a big bass note it will go from 14V down to 11V. So i will be looking at running a small battery in the back to try and offset the load. Unless you're trying to show everyone what you got bumping in the back one 10 is plenty.

Meh... I like it loud loud loud.... I've got a single 12 now, down from 2 12s, running about 800ish watts to it now. Not a low-sensitivity sub, either... but it isn't near enough for me. I'm likely going to be running around 3k to subs alone, so I will be forking out for an upgraded alternator. Something at least 270 amps, I think I've seen a couple 320-amp versions. About $750 or so, but well worth it to me. I've got 3 alts and 5kW right now in my Tahoe, so I'm definitely looking for a lot of sound.
I do notice the voltage drop in my system right now, but not nearly as much when I'm driving. At idle it'll pull down into the 11s. Currently about... 1500W or so (rated). |

What if we have the retractable cargo cover in the trunk? If we install the the Zenenclosures I'm guessing I'll probably have to get rid of the cover? (pretty sure I know the answer but I'll ask anyways lol)

I actually just purchased one of these and waiting for it to come in the mail. I will be writing a in detail review of the product. I purchased the one the spare tire magic box. Seems like a good concept and if it works, I will be more than astonished. The sub that they are providing me with is the JL 13TW5 (one 12').

I've done large sub installs in the past. Real easy to go after the SPL. Now for SQ in a tight space, that is where the fun begins. A real challenge is to put an SQ system using a single 8" or better yet a 6" sub. The Z has lots of opportunities to do this. I could do a pair of 6's or 8's on wedge box seated in the front seat. Staging all set in the front.
