back-up camera w/ kenwood

First i apologize if this has been addressed.

Putting a rear view camera when i put in my kenwood. My understanding is i can connect the power wire from the camera to the orange reverse wire from the trunk. Once done, all I have to run to the head unit is the rca.

However, on the headunit there is a wire for back up camera. Do i need to connect that to anything if i'm already pulling power from the trunk? Im assuming its similar to an amp turn on and therefor needs to be connected to something to trigger a video feed.

Good question, I just went through this myself about 2 weeks back:

You'll need 2 power wires for this setup. The first is for the camera itself - this can be either the orange wire from the trunk, or an accessory power (i.e. amp activation). The second power wire is for the lead to the back of the head unit - this one NEEDS to be the orange wire, because reverse activates "backup mode."

Personally I spliced into the orange wire and split it two ways, one to the camera and one to the HU.

Hope that helps.

u da man. I think i'll go this route rather than look for another orange wire by the fuse panel.

I hooked up my Kenwood CMOS-310 to my Pioneer 4100. I ran the cables back from my head unit and didn't splice into anything. What I got is my backup cam stays on as a backdrop to my radio. When I touch my screen, I have my radio interface and after 5 seconds it goes back to my backup cam. I like this because the 310 can change views, so I keep it on the view that I can see my blind spot while driving down the freeway. If needed, I can also force my backup cam to come up. It comes up automatically, but not on reverse if that makes sense.

To hook it up like this, I just followed the instructions from the 310.

nice. I've run the wire. Just need to do the connections now. I was thinking going that route bit a lil hesitant on long term effects of having the camera on constantly

Understandable. If I want the camera off and only show my radio interface, I turn my radio SCREEN off then on again (an option on my 4100)...the camera will stay off until I select it from my radio interface. OR I can simply leave it off.

Just giving you options.

Hope this helps!

To my surprise install went fairly easy w/o any glitches. I'm always hesitant whenever I have to splice into factory wires but my tap connectors got a solid connection. I do however kind of regret not going with the constant on method so I could see my back at anytime without having to put it in reverse.

Its best to not have the camera 'always on' I've seen on the net that folks that did that burnt out the camera vs only having it powered on during reverse.

I'm not sure about the setup on the newer models, but I've got a DNX9960 with a CMOS300 camera. One wire goes to a constant source and one to the reverse wire. Mine is set up so that when I push and hold the "Audio" button, the camera comes on. It also comes on when I put the car in reverse. To change the views (5 different), I touch the right side of the screen and to turn on the guidelines, I touch the left side of the screen.

Yeah. It's really a pain. Garmin sells a lifetime map subscription for portables, but you have to pay a frickin' premium to update our units. Unless of course you want to do a little hackage.

This is why I like mirrorlink/appradio style HUs. If you have one of these and a smartphone, you have better nav that is cheap or free to update. Waze gets you traffic, speed traps, and other alerts.
