6.5 Speaker Swap Questions

Hey Guys. I am about to replace the two 6.5 speakers because as you all know they suck. I am keeping the stock head unit (for now) and that leads me to a few questions. I apologize if they have been asked before, but I have been searching to avail.

1. To just replace the 6.5s, can I just use the stock wiring from the old speakers without changing anything?

2. I believe stock is 2-way speakers. If I were to get 3-way, do I have to add additional wires or am I am better off with sticking to the 2-way?

3. Are there any power limitations that I should be worried about?

Thanks guys. Sorry for being such a newbie. I don't do much electrical work let alone audio.

Looking at the Sony XS-GT1638F or Sound Ordnance P-65

Ideally, you'd probably want to run new speaker wire but it's not absolutely required. Fatter wires generally equal a little bit better levels but you're not likely to notice a difference if you aren't an audiophile with a high grade system.

The 2 way to 3 way doesn't really make a difference in wiring but it means you'll have less power for each of the speakers. That might degrade your bass performance a little.

Power limitations depend on speakers. Are you adding an amp or just running new speakers from a stock stereo? If you're just running the stock power, you don't really need to worry about it too much. Just make sure you don't get anything that is designed for crazy amounts of power, otherwise it'll under perform it's specs.

Thank you sir. You have answered all my questions.

Also if you don't mind me asking, what kind of difference should I expect to hear? I mean the stock sound system is pretty crappy and I want the music to sound a little crisper. I'm no audiophile, but the stock speakers are just unbearable.

OP

#1 You are going to want to run new speaker wire to everything to bypass the factory crossovers and make installation much simpler.

#2. As said the more speakers you have the less each one will get, I'd recommend running a 2 way COMPONENT set.

#3 Yes your stock head unit is probably putting out around 9-15 watts at best, a new head unit will at least do 22 watts and a new amp will do anywhere between 50-150 and beyond.

Your going to hear a bit better highs but your mids and lows will diminish a lot. I recommend running a new head unit and or amp.

Ok guys I appreciate the input. Looks like I'll wait to upgrade the head unit then grab speakers to go along with it.

Couldn't agree more with bigaudiofanat.

I spent about $1000 on my system when it was all said and done and it was worth every penny. It's not going to blow anyone away but it's a good quality system. My basic setup is in my signature.

I think when I have the money, I will invest in a system like yours. I just wish they would throw in a system like the Vettes have. My body has a Z51 package C6 and it has amazing quality and bass. Oh well. I didn't buy the car for listening to music.

I upgraded my speakers and it is a lot crisper than the stock ones. Just used the stock wiring, and I'm sure it will sound a lot better if you run new wiring but I'm not an audiophile so it works for me. So to answer your question you can use the stock wiring if you want a bit crisper sound, and you can run a new wire if you really do want it sounding that much better but it takes that much more effort. In the end it's up to you :P I hated my stock non touring speakers, and my new ones are much better even with the crappy stock wiring.
