When I put an aftermarket double din (Pioneer AVH8400) on my Bose system, it made a HUGE difference.

IMO, the weakest link in the Bose system is the head unit itself. The system really woke up after swapping it out.

Of course, it's nothing compared to a full aftermarket setup, but for what little work is required to change out the HU, it was a huge difference.
After you changed the Bose HU, can you still use the factory mic and steering wheel control?

No you can keep steering wheel controls but factory mic you would have to hard wire into but I recommend using the mic that comes with the new head unit for best results.

Hey pfdaxe did you ever carry on and get the rest of the speakers swapped out? New loc and amp etc. I really like my sub and want to keep going but wanted to hear how you made out first!

Thanks for the links guys, I'll start digging.

I'm not sure why there seems to be so much hatred towards the nav system HU in general. Sure I get that Bose doesn't sound as badass as a complete aftermarket setup, but I've rolled with aftermarket double DIN navs in the past (Pioneer AVIC-D3) and I was definitely not impressed with the navigation. I'm pretty sure that my current nav is Navteq and my previous Pioneer was Teleatlas, in my opinion Navteq is far superior in quality. Again, this might just be psychosomatic but it feels much higher quality. Also, I've never had an aftermarket bluetooth handsfree integration work as well as stock factory one. This of course excludes the Zs just because no matter what mic system you have the road noise makes it useless.

Cheers!
