Thoughts on in car computer?
So I was thinking of grabbing a Raspberry Pi and plugging it into my car via the VGA outlets. I wanted to use a bluetooth keyboard+track pad combo w/ a wifi dongle. Any thoughts or suggestions on this? I want it so I can have a clean library of my music & store videos (to be played while waiting in the parked position of course). I would be running XBMC onto it.
Has anyone done something similar to this? I want to do Raspberry Pi soley for its compact design & lack of heat generated. Suggestions? criticism? SideNote: I'll have to bypass my Video so it can be on while driving (solely for music purposes). |

my office is at work and i dont see the need to have a computer or tablet in my car.
do you guys work out of your car? if so, then i suppose it *could* make sense...but since HU's provide most of the entertainment and email/voice from my smartphone, i see less and less of a reason why one would need a computer in a car. if i had to compose something on my computer, i'd stop the car, hop to a coffeeshop with my notebook and work on it there. :icon17: |
I think the app radio has a lot of potential, but they have to work on a couple of things IMO. Like wireless connectivity for the apps for starters lol

i remember back in the early 2000's some dumbarse at work put a full blown pc in his car just to play mp3's, dvd's, and some games. was so sad. :icon17:
do people even hook up their playstations to their HU's these days? lol... |
Again: i wanted a full music library on my oem screen. I'm not gonna do business in it, just use it for music and movies when I'm on my hour lunch at work. There's no easy i can add a head unit, and there's no where to mount my tablet. That's why i will be only using the XBMC program.

Honestly, in my car I will be connecting a PS3 or BluRay player And I think the computer in a car just makes life easier (and harder because of the install) to do things like watching movies, I can put the WHOLE library of any and every movie I have vs MOST, and even then, I've got a decent amount of movie in a format that can't be read by most HUs. So that's my reasoning for thinking it's nice to have, that is all :tiphat: |
Id put one in my car... Im actually considering it now that i saw this thread lol.
Its like when people tell me "why would you buy a 2 seat car"... Because i can! Same idea with this. People do it because its their car/money, and because they can. |
CarPC is more about being able to run what you want and not locked into a certain software UI or setup.
One guy in Houston runs one to monitor the ECU since he is boosted and they stopped selling the HKS Camp 2. He actually has more than my camp 2 and better customization. Also a carPC will be faster and cheaper to upgrade down the road. |
